Metis Career Advisor Ashley Purdy will give her #ProTips talk regarding landing a job in data science and then join a panel of data science hiring partners for a discussion about landing a job in data science.

Ashley has worked in employment services for over 6 years specifically within the tech industry. She has been with Metis-Chicago since they opened in January 2017. She assists students and graduates with career coaching and support and manages relationships with the network of employer partners in Chicago.

Panel:
Kevin Goetsch, Director of Data at Home Chef, favors three topics of conversation in no particular order: tacos, his kittens, and data. Kevin has been working in the field of data and data science for eight years. He has a wealth of knowledge across the data field from distributed compute and hive metastores to machine learning and deploying statistical models. Kevin has a Master's of Science, Economics and Policy Analysis from Charles H. Kellstadt Graduate School of Business at DePaul University.

Maria Selvaggio, People Operations Lead at Tempus, is the People Operations Lead at Tempus. Tempus is a technology company that is building the world’s largest library of molecular and clinical data and an operating system to make that data accessible and useful. Maria oversees the People Operations function at Tempus ensuring that the company’s benefits, employee relations, and talent acquisition processes are working efficiently and parallel the company’s culture and strategic vision. Before landing at Tempus, Maria spent time in various managing and recruiting positions at Epic, Groupon, Google and Grubhub. She received her BS in Business Administration from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Drew Fustin, Data Scientist/Owner at Automaton Data, provides consulting and contracting services for early- to mid-stage tech companies across the breadth of the data science and data engineering disciplines. He draws on over five years of data science experience in a broad range of tech environments — from pre-Series A to post-IPO, from SaaS to e-commerce. He created and led the data science organization at SpotHero, whose responsibilities included data warehousing, marketing optimization, and garage pricing recommendations. He also helped build the Grubhub news bureau program, a PR initiative turning food data into content featured in hundreds of articles and infographics across a variety of media outlets. He holds a PhD in physics from the University of Chicago, where he studied dark matter by looking for tiny bubbles in a chamber over a mile underground in an active Canadian nickel mine. As you do.

MJ Berends, Data Science Tech Lead at Jellyvision, helps guide the development of data-centric products and tools. Jellyvision’s core product is ALEX, a personalized interactive counselor that uses design, humor, and behavioral science to help employees make great benefits decisions. Jellyvision’s deep expertise in human-centered design provides a rich environment for exploring ways data can augment creativity. Prior to Jellyvision, she spent time in the Linguistics PhD program at Northwestern, and then at Leo Burnett authoring models and software to help marketers make sense of the growing volume of text and image data.
