Metro Detroit Outdoors & Hiking (Sierra Club-S.E. Michigan) Pages

Welcome to Metro Detroit Outdoors & Hiking!

About Us Leaders
  • They're volunteers!
  • Outings reflect the interests of the leader who decides all aspects of the outing.
Participant Responsibility
  • Each is responsible for their own safety and well-being re weather/difficulty of activity/stamina/health.
  • Carefully read the outing description to understand the activity; contact the leader if in doubt.
  • “Hiking” means unpaved trails/roots/rocks/hills/crevices/etc.--5 miles hiking is much more strenuous than the same miles on a neighborhood sidewalk.
  • Children welcome IF they can behave appropriately and complete the activity.
  • Electronic gear is not welcome; cell phone use should be strictly limited.
Meeting Places and Costs
  • At each outdoor activity, participants must sign a liability waiver and pay a $1 fee (we do both at meeting spot or trailhead).
  • We often meet at local shopping center/parking area; if this won't work for you, contact the leader for trailhead location and time.
  • If ridesharing (not required), passengers need to share driver’s gas/entrance fee costs (nearly all parks require an admission fee or a season's pass).
  • For liability reasons, the activity officially starts at the trailhead, not the meeting spot.
  • Optional restaurant stop usually follows the activity.
Basic Guidelines
  • Pets not allowed.
  • Arrive promptly.
  • Come dressed and equipped appropriate to the activity and likely weather. #1 is water.
  • Know that group activities take longer, e.g., a 5-mile hike takes about 4-5 hours from meeting spot and back.
  • Inform the leader of any problems/needs (rest/water/food/toilet).
  • Stay with the group, neither ahead nor behind; do not leave without talking with the leader.
  • Follow all park rules.
