Statistical Volunteer for Social Good: Case Histories and How to Get Involved

Details

Come join us in a conversation with David Corliss , Lead Data Scientist in Business Analytics at FCA, networking with David and other members, and learning from a technical presentation on how to use data science for social good. This presentation brings together experiences from professionals working as volunteers for organizations, charities, and in academic research. Pro bono work, much like that done by physicians, attorneys and professionals in other areas is rapidly growing in statistical practice as an important part of a statistical career, offering the opportunity to utilize your skills in a places where they are so needed but cannot be supported in a for-pay position. Statistical volunteers also gain important learning experiences, mentoring, networking, and other opportunities for professional development. David will share experiences from volunteering for local charities, NGO's and other organizations and causes, both in the US and around the world. A case study will be shown doing geospatial clustering of communities for a local Habitat for Humanity group, identifying the best places to look for new volunteers and donors.

Some refreshments and beverage will be provided.
