"Petey," huh? Are you related to a certain?megalomaniacal marsupiod AI? If you don't get it, then the answer is no, and you need to read Schlock Mercenary. ;)

Joking about naming coincidences aside (that webcomic being the only place I've encountered "Petey" before), here's what DM John sent me regarding character generation:

Character Generation:
* 32-point buy for attributes.
* 7,500 points to be divided at will between XP of the character and gp value of equipment.
* 7,500 additional points in return for a detailed background/history of the character (at least 400 words.)
* 7,500 additional points if the player has clear knowledge of the tropes of classic fantasy fiction -- not just D&D tie-in novels.
* If you want to use anything from outside the core rulebooks plus Unearthed Arcana, please check with me first, and bring a copy of the book (or at least the page with the information) for it to every session.

Rules Variants:
* Spell point magic system, with fatigue, from Unearthed Arcana.
* Armor (including natural armor, and enhancement bonuses to those) does not make you harder to hit; it absorbs damage instead.? (Shields, dodge, deflection, etc. work normally.)? Armor does not improve your AC; instead, you get DR equal to half the bonus you would normally get for the armor (rounded down), and Damage Conversion (which turns regular damage to nonlethal) equal to the other half (rounded up).

Example: a +1 chain shirt normally gives +5 to AC.? In my game, it gives Damage Reduction 2 and Damage Conversion 3.

If you were hit by 9 points of damage, the first 2 points would be stopped by the DR, the next 3 points would be converted to nonlethal, and the remaining 4 points would go through as normal, so you would have 4 points of regular damage and 3 of nonlethal.

For my commentary:

Essentially, consider 1 xp = 1 gp, and ?you ?have at least 7,500 gp to spend. Give him 400 words (easy stuff -- one page, if that) and you get double. Be well-versed in "big name" classic fantasy (the stuff that's stood the test of time, and including Tolkien, Lewis, Lovecraft, Vance, etc.), and you get another 7,500.?

If you think you can get the backstory and that you qualify for the third, then create a character like that and if DM John needs you to cut back he'll tell you.?

If it weren't a little over half a day to the game I'd just let John get back to you himself, but if you have any more questions I'll be happy to help if I can, and I'll direct you to John if I can't answer anything.

How much XP and gold did you say a lvl 4 character would have?

Also, for point buy, how many points did you say to have?
