• Solving Advent of Code with Functions

    Online event

We're excited to partner with the NYC Elixir meetup for our February event!

Advent of Code, the infamous annual coding challenge, lets participants solve puzzles in any programming language, using input and output for validating solutions. Sometimes functional programming works in your favor. Sometimes it doesn't.

Our panelists will be reviewing their AoC 2020 solutions using Elixir, Haskell, and Elm, discussing the benefits and trade-offs of the different languages for the problems.

Interested in presenting your own solutions? Message us!

    ---
This virtual meetup will be presented via Zoom. To avoid malicious actors, participants will be placed into the Zoom waiting room and manually admitted by the NYC Elixir team. We will compare Zoom display names to the attendee list. If your Zoom display name does not match your Meetup display name, please inform us when RSVPing or by using the Meetup messaging function.

If you have questions, please contact us.

  • Intro to Phoenix LiveView: Real Time Apps, No JavaScript

    Presenter: Andrew Glassman

Phoenix LiveView takes the best of Single Page Apps, and Server Side Rendered technologies to provide small and fast real time applications. State is managed on the server, and only DOM diffs are sent to the client. The end result is a simplified stack where you only need to write in one language, Elixir.

In this talk, I'll show a demo of what can be accomplished with Phoenix LiveView, and how it compares to a traditional SPA, or SSR application.

  • Achieving functional programming in Java

    RokkinCat Office

This month we have a special guest speaker that will be doing a deep dive into a single topic.

John Napier is going to come up from Chicago to talk about Lambda, a library of functional programming patterns in Java. https://palatable.github.io/lambda/

A little more info about our speaker: John currently works with developers on software fundamentals for an algorithmic trading firm based in Chicago and spends entirely too much time engulfed in problem domains he knows nothing about and has no earthly business trying to learn. Prior to his work in the financial domain, he built systems for financial trading, global supply chain management automation and fulfillment, network behavioral anomaly detection, real-time auctioning, ad-tech, ed-tech, fractional trading, and algorithmic cloud security.

In April, we'll switch back to our lightning talk format, so save up your ideas and we'll look forward to hearing them.

RokkinCat is graciously providing pizza again this month!

  • Lightning talks / Show and tell

    RokkinCat Office

Sticking with our short talk/demo format, we will once again have 3 - 5 slots available for you to show what you're working on, share something you learned, or demo some cool code.

The presentation should aim to be 5 - 15 minutes, with a hard time limit of 20 minutes. Please post a comment with a brief description of what you'd like to present. Anything FP-related is fair game!

I'd really like to encourage as many members as possible to participate. Even if you're just learning something, you can still present. It will help you learn it more deeply by sharing and explaining.
