Intro to WordPress development.

This meetup is for folks who have touched little to no code, but want to customize themes and use hooks. We’ll see how far we get, but I’m planning on covering the basics of child themes (including how to create one), basics of WP hooks, and an intro to the template hierarchy. And, as always, answer any questions you have.

About the presenter:

Emma Edgar has been working with WP since 2012ish and currently works as a developer for Tuna Traffic in Caledonia, WI. Developing websites is the perfect blend between her geeky and creative sides, and she always loves sharing her knowledge with others.

Frankly, today was over my head. However, by listening, I hear buzz words over and over - then I can search the sites that were mentioned. So, it was helpful. Plus spoke to longtime WP friends form MeetUp and WordCamp.

Glad you found it helpful. :) I know all topics at first can be overwhelming, but the more exposure to new ideas the better! If you have questions about anything in particular, feel free to send me a comment on my website, and I'll do my best to answer them. I've also posted my slides and notes on there, too. :)

Here is a link to the resources (including Lynda) available via my library card:

You may want to check if your local library offers the same.

While it was a bit over my head, I at least know where to look for additional wp resources.

Thank you for the pizza and pop. I didn't have time for dinner, so this was a nice addition.

Thanks for sharing. :) I'll definitely look for Lynda on my library's website!!

If you need a reference point of where to start looking, I've posted my slides on my website

It was a good introduction to WordPress Themes. I liked it when she showed how to easily create custom page in your theme that matched the name of the page by using the Theme Hierarchy.

I'm interested in learning all about word press, so I'm hoping this would be the right choice for me. I need to build a website, and have been a bit nervous trying it on my own... without the know how so-to-speak. I'm usually a quick study... I guess I'll see. Just waiting for a date.

I'll help teach and organize. If we could do it at WorkHub in Waukesha any evening at 6ish or later that would work best for me.
