February MN Azure User Group: Kubernetes At The Edge With Azure Arc

Details

Please join us for the February Minnesota Azure User Group meeting! This month's meeting will dive into Kubernetes and Azure Arc presented by Dave Strebel is a Global Open Source Architect on the Microsoft Global Black Belt team. Learn more about Dave here @dave_strebel. Here are the session details:

Title: Kubernetes At The Edge With Azure Arc

Abstract:
While the original intent of Kubernetes was to solve cloud-centric architecture challenges, Kubernetes can be used as a platform for developing Edge and IoT applications.

However, there are challenges regarding resource and workloads management in edge-based infrastructure, as there are thousands of edge and far edge nodes to manage. Having a greater centralized control from cloud, security policies and less latency are basic features expected with edge infrastructure deployed by enterprises

The session will focus on special aspects of developing services for IoT and Edge environments, like autonomy, locality and secure communication to name some.
What Kubernetes features can be used to address IoT and Edge aspects of developing microservices?

This will be a demo-heavy session and attendees will leave with a better understanding of how they can solve their edge computing challenges.

Dave's Full Bio:
Dave Strebel is a Global Open Source Architect on the Microsoft Global Black Belt team. Dave focuses on containers, microservice architecture and the cloud-native ecosystem. Dave has been working in technology for over 15 years and has a mixed background across application development to infrastructure. He has also recently co-authored the Kubernetes Best Practice book published by O'Reilly Media.

Each month we bring in a speaker to present on various topics around Azure. The meetings are typically at the Microsoft office in Edina MN. The duration of the meeting is: 4:00PM-5:15PM with the speaker typically starting at 4:10 to 4:15PM. We provide free food and drink at every meeting.

The meeting format/agenda is as follows:
• MN Azure user group board updates (5 Minutes)
• Sponsor talk (10 Minutes)
• Azure topic (30-45 Minutes)
• Roundtable discussion/or Lightning talks (30 Minutes if time allows)"

This meeting is sponsored by Trubonomic!

Turbonomic operates as the brain of the hybrid data center, integrating with technologies like Azure, VMware, UCS, APM solutions, Kubernetes, and various storage vendors to provide a complete application aware infrastructure. In understanding real time application demand Turbo is able to provide simultaneous decisions around sizing, placement, and capacity to continuously drive health across your on-premise, hybrid, or public cloud environments.

Highlights include…
• The ability to develop and accelerate responsible cloud migrations, and maintain continuous optimization across cloud and containerized environments
• Actionable insights for scaling, scheduling, RI utilization & purchases, storage tiering, and identifying wasted storage
• Application-aware infrastructure that understanding the interdependencies between applications, containers, cloud, virtualization, storage, etc.
• Decisions that can be automated across the infrastructure stack to continuously drive out risk to critical application workloads
• Enabling customers to safely drive up VM:Host densities and accurately plan for on-boarding of new workloads and upcoming refreshes
