Will Seeking the Sublime Bring about the Perfection of Humanity?
Details
April's topic will be conducted by Bro. Sandra McKeown on a study of Freemasonry: Will Seeking the Sublime Bring about the Perfection of Humanity? After a short lecture, a discussion and debate by the group will follow.
The sublime in literature refers to using language and descriptions to excite thought and emotions beyond ordinary experience; of such excellence, grandeur, or beauty as to inspire great admiration or awe. Does the sublime exist today or has the concept of awe been washed away by motives of self-importance? Longinus, in his work ‘On the Sublime’ in the third century, suggests only those refined and cultivated are able to judge the relative sublimity of a work. Low and vulgar thoughts must not be part of the observer. Membership into Freemasonry requires the following attributes: just, upright and free, of mature age, sound judgment and strict morals. Should these attributes guarantee an understanding of the sublime? Are we all capable of gaining an awareness of being on the border of the possible and impossible? The threshold of human and transcending the human? Let’s try! Join us for an intriguing discussion on the slippery slope of the sublime.
