What we're about
This is a meetup for people with Misophonia (aka Selective Sound Sensitivity Syndrome or 4S) to support one another and share info. I also hope that we can provide support for parents, kids, spouses and friends of people with Misophonia. As this is a newly identified condition, let's build a support network together. I am based in Pasadena, but hopefully we can meet the needs of people all over the L.A. area through rotating our meetup locations or through using Skype or Facetime.
Misophonia is a little-understood disorder in which people are "triggered" or unable to bear certain soft sounds, visual stimuli or other sensory stimuli. "Misophonia" means, literally, "hatred of sound," but in fact most people with it love many other kinds of sounds, such as music or poetry. Additionally, a large number of people with misophonia are triggered by non-auditory stimuli. Misophonia is different from hyperacusis, which is a heightened sensitivity to sound in general; however, many people with misophonia also have hyperacusis.
Right now I'm gathering info and ideas from new members and will schedule a meeting soon. In the meantime, please let me know if you have any suggestions or other questions. Also, if you'd like to offer any ideas or questions to the group, or if you'd just like to tell everyone a little about yourself, feel free to answer the questions in the Profile section or post a comment.
FYI: I will not share will not share your name, comments or information with anyone outside this group without your express approval, and I ask other members to follow the same policy. If you have additional privacy concerns please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the privacy settings and policies of meetup.com as well.
I look forward to meeting you!
