Would you describe the work you do more as engineering, craft, science, or art?

All of the above. I do find an artistic quality in elegant code and design. Bringing science and engineering principles to business problems that would, on the surface, appear unrelated brings me satisfaction.

Do you have any suggestions for software topics you would like to discuss with this group?

It appears to me that the professional software field often divides itself by specific technology stack. Or, perhaps, recruiters and companies do not know how else to look for software developers. With that in mind, one topic might be how to start changing ourselves and our image to transcend specific technologies, instead focusing on skills that apply regardless of the technology stack.

What do you see as the most exciting or interesting trend in software? Why?

I see two immediate trends of interest. One is the increasing availability and usability of "big data" solutions to solve an increasing number of problems. Another is the trend toward ambient information, made possible by the proliferation of mobile technologies.

I am a full-time software developer working both in .NET technologies and other, open-source web and database realms. I am a classical musician, mostly in saxophone. I was the 2012 DFL candidate for Minnesota Senate in District 58.
