• Practical App Store Optimization (February 3rd, 6:30 pm)

    Arbormoon Software, Inc.

Friends, Welcome back! We have a great topic and speakers for our February 3rd Meetup. Tom Crawford and Shahzeb Kahn are devs and more. They are active contributors to the tech community and incredibly busy and successful professionally. Description: Practical App Store Optimization (ASO) “If you build it, [they] will come” might hold true for baseball fields in Iowa, but it doesn’t hold true for mobile. Your idea is unique and has an audience. Your design is beautiful. Your code is bug free. Your user experience is intuitive and engaging. You put the app on the store, and still only friends and family download your app. During this session, we’ll talk about how to get the most out of the app stores, and provide practical tips on how to improve your ratings, rankings, and downloads. App Store Optimization (ASO) is a nebulous, poorly understood, and constantly evolving art form. We will show a couple examples of tools we use to help with the process, as well as one case study from an indy app and one from a large organization. About the Speakers Shahzeb Khan is a software craftsman, who has worked for various Ann Arbor startups and larger companies like Domino’s and TD Ameritrade. He currently works as Manager of Software Development on the thinkorswim mobile team. He founded Anzytron, LLC to fuel his passion for iOS development, and has used it to publish a myriad of apps to the App Store for himself and his clients. When he is not coding, he is either spending time with his beautiful family, or struggling to learn the Game of Thrones intro on his guitar. Tom Crawford has been involved with technology almost as long as he can remember, working on everything from punch cards to Swift 5. He currently spends his days as a Senior Software Development Consultant for TD Ameritrade, and his nights running Moveable Bytes—a mobile development shop with a variety of apps on the app stores. He has also taught mobile design & development for Michigan State, Washtenaw Community College, and a number of full and part time bootcamps. Location: Arbormoon Software, 120 E. Huron, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48104 Agenda: 6:30 - 7:00: Food and Networking 7:00 - 8:00: Introductions followed by Tom and Shahzeb, and Q&A. 8:00 - 8:30: Networking Looking forward to seeing you!

  • Design to Development - Make it Easy! Peter Lauwers (Sept 4th: note date change)

Friends, Welcome back! We have an outstanding speaker for our season-opening September 4th Meetup: Peter Lauwers will join us to discuss "Design to Development - Make it Easy!". *Please note because of Labor Day, this Mobile Monday will be on Wednesday, September 4th*. Producing the right assets for the project can be a big pain. Missing bucket sizes, vectors that just don’t work correctly, tight deadlines to produce size changes in Photoshop or Illustrator, and learning new tools - all are potential pitfalls and obstacles in the way of achieving a project timeline. Adobe XD exports assets in a way that developers can use right away. The best part is that it already integrates with the Creative Suite products that designers already use, making it likely that this will be a welcome addition to the toolbox for the product team. We’ll go through what you can expect from Adobe XD from the perspective of a developer as well as a designer. This topic area is a very common roadblock or detour in a development process. Join us to hear about a way to streamline things, create better collaborations and possibly save days or weeks on a project. About the Speaker: Peter Lauwers is the CEO of orangesplash technologies inc., overseeing product design, architecture, and UI/UX. His career started 25 years ago, with two major branches that he has successfully brought together; 1) printed advertising/design, marketing, and branding, and 2) along with IT/Database architecture and design. This combination has helped Peter effectively manage and support creative teams in a number of large and small advertising agencies and design firms. As the digital era began to rise, Peter’s creative and technical background was ideal to embrace the changes taking place in the advertising and marketing fields as well as forge the path of internet and mobile app development. Peter has led design and development of many successful IT and mobile projects. Major recognition has come from numerous sources, including: Highest Yearly e-Commerce revenue award from General Motors, and a Project of the Year award from Little Caesars for their mobile app, which Peter led from its inception. Location: Arbormoon Software, 120 E. Huron, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48104 Agenda: 6:30 - 7:00: Food and Networking 7:00 - 8:00: Introductions followed by Peter Lauwers and Q&A. 8:00 - 8:30: Networking Looking forward to seeing you!

  • Cross Platform or Native - The Expert Panel Discusses Whens and Whys

As sure as mobile tech evolves, cross platform tech evolves. Every so often, we need to take a breath and discuss the latest. There are newer and more mature platforms available - Xamarin, Titanium, Flutter, React Native, PhoneGap, Ionic (?), and more. Cross platform development promises a lot. However, this is not a binary decision based on one or two factors. Many variables play a role in a good decision making process: • Can you really save money developing in cross platform? • Is it faster? • Can cross platform apps really deliver on UI/UX like native platforms. • What are the development skills that are available to you? • What do you anticipate your support requirements being? • Are you open to compromise? • How can you validate the credibility/legitimacy of a platform and a vendor? Decision makers and developers should be able to discuss these options intelligently and with a more robust understanding of how to approach the question. Rather than a brawl (which I was so hoping for), we’ll have experts to help you get to your decision point comfortable you’ve chosen the right path for your project. Join us! on May 6th at 6:30 for our panel of experts to discuss how, why, and when to consider cross platform development as an alternative to native development. Our panel: Rob Kerr: Rob is an independent consultant/developer with a broad range of experience in backend development, database systems, cloud platforms, and payment systems. He has moved in to mobile solutions in a big way and has an impressive portfolio to show for it. He is conversant in iOS and also cross platform development. https://robkerr.com/ Scott Weber: Scott is an Android expert and is currently working at Expedia. Scott is a co-organizer of the GDG Ann Arbor Meetup and is an in-demand speaker locally and regionally. https://scottweber.com Eric Shapiro: Eric is a long-time Mac and iOS developer based here in Ann Arbor. He is currently Director of Development at AppVision, a mobile application security company, and maintains a consultancy at Relium Corporation. His most popular apps have been Weather Underground's signature weather app and WunderMap. https://relium.com Ryan Lanciaux: Ryan takes a break to join us from his busy contract/consultancy life. Ryan is expert in React Native, but has skills in a number of platforms and brings a fresh perspective to any technical situation. http://ryanlanciaux.com Join us! Bring your questions for Scott, Eric, Ryan, and Rob. Get a couple of pieces of pizza, a drink, and enjoy. Location: Arbormoon Software: 120 E. Huron, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48104 Agenda: 6:30 - 7:00: Food and Networking 7:00 - 8:00: Introductions followed by The Panel with Q&A at the end. 8:00 - 8:30: Networking =======================.

  • Apps Are For Everyone...Right? Inclusive Mobile w Jeannette Washington, M. Ed.

Friends, We have an excellent speaker for our April 1st Meetup and a timely topic: Jeannette Washington will join us to discuss Inclusive Design, aka Accessibility. Your code is clean; your images are responsive, and your content is meaningful. Your app appears perfect, but is it perfect for everyone? With approximately 57 million Americans living with disabilities today, this is the nation’s largest minority and the only minority group that any person can join at any time. So, did you design with accessibility in mind? Join us as we deploy the narratives that exist at the intersection of ability and access. Here are just two items that highlight the urgency with which this topic should be treated: 1) Domino’s Pizza (in January of this year) lost a widely watched appeal case in the 9th Circuit Federal Court for not making their website and apps accessible for the blind. The implications of this case are potentially incredibly far reaching. https://www.courthousenews.com/court-says-dominos-pizza-website-must-be-accessible-to-the-blind/ 2) The University of Michigan specifically, along with many other organizations (commercial and academic) are moving aggressively to make inclusive design a part of their tech RFPs. Jeannette will help us understand accessibility, provide statistical influence, discuss the difference between accessibility apps and apps that possess accessible components, address legal ramifications and legal relevance to beloved brands and provide a running start for further research. Join us! Bring your questions forJeannette. Get a couple of pieces of pizza, a drink, and take part in the discussion and learning on this important topic. About the Speaker: Jeannette Washington, M.Ed., worked as a Speech Pathologist for a number of years before attending a coding boot camp and transcending into teaching career changers and industry implants to code. Her passion for exceptional learners has helped her ignite conversations across multiple dimensions of diversity in the tech industry. Jeannette owns and runs Bearly Articulating, a concierge style, equity, diversity and inclusivity (D&I) think tank. Location: Arbormoon Software, 120 E. Huron, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48104 Agenda: 6:30 - 7:00: Food and Networking 7:00 - 8:00: Introductions followed by Jeannette Washington's talk with Q&A at the end. 8:00 - 8:30: Networking Looking forward to seeing you.

  • Strategic Implications of Machine Learning and Mobile

    Arbormoon Software, Inc.

Happy New Year Mobile Monday Ann Arbor friends and colleagues! We’re pleased to announce our first speaker of 2019, Keith Bourne, founder of Gradient Valley, the new Machine Learning (ML) startup here in Ann Arbor. Keith has been giving technical talks at a number of tech Meetups over the past year on HOW to get in to ML. We’ve asked Keith to bring it all together with strategic insights on WHY businesses should be interested in ML – particularly in mobile. According to Keith, Machine Learning (ML) has been a game changer in every industry it has touched. In the next couple of years, Machine Learning will be exerting a greater and greater impact on just about every sector of business (marketing/advertising, HR, logistics, operations, healthcare, security, software development, and executive management). Because of the rapid scale-up at Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and IBM (and Gradient Valley), the cost of these efforts is coming way down, and the benefits are coming within reach of just about everybody. That said, the train is leaving the station. You don’t want to be left behind. Particularly if your competitor is realizing the benefits of this dynamic area. Keith will address the broader context of ML in mobile where you are bringing your software into a physical world that includes phones, tablets, sensors, and all of the other data points that make Machine Learning that much more effective. Can you expand your potential with Machine Learning? Join us! Bring your questions for Keith. Get a couple of pieces of pizza, a drink, and enjoy. About the Speaker: Keith Bourne is the founder of Gradient Valley (https://gradientvalley.com/), focused on machine learning strategy consulting and development. He has been on the forefront of cutting-edge technology since the 90’s, with extensive management and technical experience in web, mobile, and machine learning. His focus has been on all aspects of building and selling incredible technology products and services, including a deep knowledge of user experience, agile programming methods, technology marketing, and most of the most popular programming languages and their capabilities. He holds an MBA from Babson College where he focused on technology entrepreneurship and marketing, providing a strong analytical base for approaching machine learning problems with an organization’s overall strategic direction in mind. He has served in diverse roles in high growth start up environments that have raised $10's of millions in revenue and funding, including Senior Software Engineer, Marketing Director, Chief Operations Officer, and Founder/Chief Executive Officer.
