Wireless Sensors; Changing Industries

Details
Sensors are ubiquitous - so much so that everyone interacts with innumerable sensors every day, often not even being aware that their activities are influenced, mediated, or even driven by sensor data. They are transforming relationships between people, machines and products in the workplace and opening new ways to create value for small, medium and large enterprises. Worker productivity and safety can be enhanced and enterprises are able to capture, get meaning, and take action on information not previously available.
In this Mobile Monday Detroit program, we will look into the world of sensors - how they have been used for millennia and how the new march toward the Internet of Things (IoT) is rekindling interest in sensor technology. Several modern applications for sensors will be explored and possible future applications will be discussed.
The event is free to attend but attendance is limited due to space limitations, therefore advance reservations via Meetup ARE REQUIRED in order to attend; if you make a reservation and your plans change, please cancel your reservation so someone else may attend. Refreshments will be served. Free parking is available in the lot next to the TechTown building. (see map below)
This Mobile Monday Detroit event is being sponsored by the Mobile Technology Association of Michigan (http://gomobilemichigan.org) (MTAM) and TechTown Detroit (http://techtowndetroit.org/).
Speakers will include:
• Gerry Roston, CEO of Civionics and Executive-in-Residence at TechTown Detroit
• Al Juarez, Director of Business Development, RX Networks
Speaker Bios:
Gerry Roston, PhD, PE
Gerry is a roboticist by training. Robots are all about sensors - both those that are needed to control the robot itself and the ones they often carry to provide information about the environment in which they work. For the past 15 years, Gerry has focused on his efforts on the intersection of technology and business in the context of early stage businesses - using his sensors and reasoning system to assist in the development of sustainable businesses. He currently serves as CEO of Civionics, Inc., a University of Michigan spinout whose technology relates to intelligent wireless sensor systems; and as an Executive-in-Residence at TechTown Detroit, where he works with a variety of early stage, technology-focused businesses.
Al Juarez
A marketing and business development executive for 25 years, Al Juarez has been a Regional Market Development Planner for Amway Global in South America, a Financial Analyst for Aeroquip Automotive North America and has helped launch several Michigan companies including coreFenix, a company that translates big data into meaningful insight and usable analytics.
A graduate of Michigan State University in Marketing, Al has an MBA in International Finance from Thunderbird School of Global Management.
In 2013, Al joined a small Michigan technology start-up tech, GeLo to bring beacon-triggered mobile communication to companies in the U.S. and worldwide. He recently joined Vancouver, Canada-based RX Networks where he will work as a Michigan-based National Director of Business Development.
Beacon-triggered communications are part of the Internet of Things and although the industry is still young, Al Juarez is an industry expert in the space.
