What we're about

We are a group of black women who love to read, want to read more and meet like-minded women. We are here to inspire women to read, share literature, fellowship, and encourage others in the joy of reading. We meet in Inglewood, CA at Darby Park on the first Saturday of the month. We are an eclectic group of women and so are our reading selections. Find out more on our website http://www.mochagirlsread.com

Dewey's 24 Hour Read-a-thon

Online / Your Home

Dewey’s 24 Hour Read A Thon ( http://www.24hourreadathon.com/ ) is back!! I love doing this event because I get through a book or two in one day. On October 26th the Challenge of reading ALL DAY long starts. During the bi-annual read-a-thon we will read books, post to our blogs, Facebook and Twitter or Goodreads about our reading, and visit other readers’ blogs. We will also participate in mini-challenges throughout the day to win prizes. (I love that part!) This event happens twice a year, in April and in October. It was created by a book lover named Dewey. The first one was held in October 2007. Dewey died in late 2008. The read-a-thon was renamed to honor its founder in 2009. On October 26th the Dewey’s 24 Hour Read-A-Thon ( https://www.24hourreadathon.com/october-2019-reader-sign-up/ ) will start at 7am for Minnesota. If you want to learn more and to sign up, click on the link. There is no money involved and it’s purely for the love of reading on your own pace, for as long or as little as you want. Go to http://www.24hourreadathon.com/ to learn more and to sign up! Every six hours I will (try to) post a reminder for you to check our book club website with the links to the hourly challenge and Mocha Girls Read challenges. Yes! You can win prizes if you join in. You don't need to have a blog to participate. This is an online event and the Dewey website is the host site you check in every couple of hours. This is the best event to get through a few books on your nightstand. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This year we are going to host a giveaway every 6 hours on our Meetup page. All you have to do is answer the questions when we start. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Book Club Meeting: The Memory Thief by Lauren Mansy

Moon Palace Books

October Book Selection | Meeting in November www.amazon.com/shop/mochagirlsread Details Book Synopsis In the city of Craewick, memories reign. The power-obsessed ruler of the city, Madame, has cultivated a society in which memories are currency, citizens are divided by ability, and Gifted individuals can take memories from others through touch as they please. Seventeen-year-old Etta Lark is desperate to live outside of the corrupt culture, but grapples with the guilt of an accident that has left her mother bedridden in the city's asylum. When Madame threatens to put her mother up for auction, a Craewick practice in which a "criminal's" memories are sold to the highest bidder before being killed, Etta will do whatever it takes to save her. Even if it means rejoining the Shadows, the rebel group she swore off in the wake of the accident years earlier. To prove her allegiance to the Shadows and rescue her mother, Etta must steal a memorized map of the Maze, a formidable prison created by the bloodthirsty ruler of a neighboring Realm. So she sets out on a journey in which she faces startling attacks, unexpected romance, and, above all, her own past in order to set things right in her world. Buy the book from Moon Palace Bookstore (most will give you a book of the month discount) or at Amazon where 7% of the sale goes towards the book club.
