I've heard this place referred to as a dive bar but I've never thought of it as one. It begs the question, "How do you define what a dive bar is?" Google "dive Bar" and most of the definitions that come up have to do with bad neighborhoods, down and out clientele and things sticking to the bottom of your shoe. The Belvedere is in a nice historical district neighborhood, is popular with SRJC students and has very clean floors. Then I noticed one definition dating back to the 1880's, the same era as the Belvedere, that went like this,"illegal drinking den or other place of ill repute, especially one located in a basement." That's it, the bar at the Belvedere IS in a basement. Whether you would like to think of it as a dive bar or not, it's the most interesting and comfortable neighborhood bar in the part of town where I live and I like to bring people there once in a while for a drink and some conversation.
