Sierra Nevada Yoga Hiking Break in Southern Spain
AS OF 7TH MARCH : MEETUP FULL A six night Spain yoga hiking break in the mountains of Andalucía, in southern Spain. Based on a working organic farm in typically rustic accommodation in a beautiful area of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. We will be including two yoga classes each day, a guided hike through the mountains and local villages, all meals and accommodation for this six night Sierra Nevada yoga hiking break. The farm grows all its own vegetables and fruit and so you can be sure that the meals will be fresh and all organically grown. The area is famed for its typical white villages and has a wonderfully traditional Spanish feel to it which is a world away from the resorts of the Costas. Overview Our location for this Sierra Nevada yoga hiking break, is an organic farm set high in the mountains of southern Spain. A perfect location for our five day (six night) break in early spring, when the weather will typically be sunny, warm and dry and the spring flowers will be at their best. The accommodation is very simple and typically Spanish. It is set on a working organic farm, complete with pool and overlooking the mountains. There will be plenty of vegetarian options, however, it is in a remote area of Spain and one group meal will be provided at each meal time, so unfortunately we cannot guarantee to cater for special dietary needs except vegetarians. The accommodation is in a mixture of singe rooms, twin shared rooms, with one dorm room of four. All the rooms share bathrooms. There is a purpose built yoga shala with some of the best views of the surrounding mountains for our yoga classes. All meals are included and will be prepared for us by a local cook using mostly fresh ingredients grown on the farm and locally, based on traditional Spanish recipes. There are also some great outside spaces and a pool to relax in after our yoga and hiking. The yoga classes will be varied and so will be suitable for beginners as well as for those who have practised before. Sessions will take place each day before breakfast and after we return from our walks. As you would expect on this Sierra Nevada Yoga Hiking break, there are some great local walks with high up mountain views, plus walks which take us along steep sided gorges and beside cool mountain streams. We will also walk to some of the typical old mountain villages nearby. As we are in the mountains however, the walks do have some steep and rocky sections and can be quite strenuous if you are not used to this type of walking. Therefore, to fully enjoy this break you should be a fit and confident hillwalker. The farm is also home to a peacock breeding sanctuary, as well as to goats, horses, cats and dogs and is a truly magical place which offers a unique opportunity to experience life on a Spanish farm. Reviews of recent Yoga Hiking Breaks in the Sierra Nevada: “Excellent! A great place to stay, well organised and fun and a wonderful group of people. Lorna :)” “As a ‘frequent flyer’ with Mountain Hikes and Yoga, this was one of the best. Thank you Kevin and Yen, but also the amazing local host and the beautiful group of people who made it very special.” – Mano “I had a wonderful time! lovely company and fabulous location – thanks Kevin and Yen.” – Simone ________________________________________________________________________ Yoga Classes During this Sierra Nevada yoga hiking break, there will be 11 classes in total. The classes will be varied and so will be suitable for beginners as well as for those who have practised before. Sessions will take place each day before breakfast and after we return from our walks, except for one morning when there will be no class. The general focus of the morning sessions will be to energise and warm up the body for our walk, and in the afternoon, will be to stretch out those tired muscles and relax the body. There will be an emphasis on the breath and movement, and our priority is for the yoga to be enjoyable and safe for all. Yoga classes will be held indoors in the purpose built yoga shala overlooking the mountains. Morning classes will last for approximately 1 hr 15 mins and evening classes up to 1 hr 30 mins. All yoga classes will be led by Yen who is a fully qualified and experienced yoga teacher registered with Yoga Alliance, a yoga sports coach and personal trainer. If you have any queries regarding the yoga sessions, please contact us. Important Note: Yoga mats will not be provided so you must bring your own. _______________________________________________________________________ Hiking There are many great local hikes in the area to some of the beautiful nearby villages, up towards the higher Sierra Mountains with spectacular views and we can follow mountain streams through deep valley gorges. On some hikes we will get transport to the start or from the finish back to the Cortijo. Please note also, that some of the walks will include sections on quite steep mountain terrain and will at times be quite strenuous. All hikes will be led by Kevin who is a fully qualified International Mountain Leader and member of the British Association of International Mountain Leaders (BAIML). Below is an example hiking schedule, which we may modify depending on weather conditions. Day 1 hike: Local white villages hike (12km, 500m ascent) The Alpujarra region of Southern Spain, where we are based is famous for its pretty and unspoilt white villages, or Pablos blancos. During the week we will explore many of these villages, but on the first day we will visit two which are nearby on our hike. We start our hike though along a short section of quiet lane, before descending steeply to the river below. We cross a small packhorse bridge and follow a rocky path eventually through trees to our first village. We take a short break here to explore and to fill up with water at the fountain, then head off towards our second village. We make our way across another ancient bridge before heading steeply uphill to rejoin the road for the final short hike back to the Cortijo. We will have lunch at the Cortijo where we are staying outside on the terrace if the weather is good, or inside in the dining room if it is cool. Day 2 hike: River valley and gorge hike (18km, 600m ascent) Today we take a packed lunch as we will be out for a bit longer and so not be back in time for lunch at the Cortijo. Our hike today takes us along the quiet road in the opposite direction to the village of Castaras. We then take a turn left and hike up through a wooded valley towards the village of Juviles where we will usually stop for a coffee break. From Juviles we descend through a steep sided gorge with spectacular views and will stop for our picnic lunch. We continue a steep descent into the next village and then follow another quiet road back to the village of Castaras where we usually stop for refreshments! Day 3: Steep sided valley hike to fire lookout (14.5km, 700m ascent) Because of the dry weather the Alpujarra region of Andalucia is quite prone to fires. There is a therefore a permanently manned lookout which has spectacular views of the surrounding hills, villages and mountains, which forms the main goal of todays hike. Our day 3 hike will initially take us back down a steep sided mountain path to the village of Busquitas. We then head across country following the course of one of the rivers, with steep cliffs to one side. We then start a steady climb up to the fire lookout with its spectacular views over the surrounding mountains. Our return is a simple downhill hike along a quiet road to the Cortijo for lunch. Day 4 and Day 5 hiking options We have lots more spectacular hikes to choose from, but we are likely to offer a longer and a shorter hike on these days. There is another pretty village which we can hike to down a steep sided valley from the Cortijo where we are staying. We can then hike back up through pomegranate and almond trees towards Castaras and return. On our last days hike we will get some transport up to Trevelez, which is the highest village in Spain. After exploring the village with its many local ham shops, we can then follow one of the GR routes on our hike back to the Cortijo, through woods, orchards and villages. _________________________________________________________________________ Accommodation Our accommodation is typically rustic but comfortable in a variety of room sizes. The rooms are bright, colourful and full of local character. All rooms are individually decorated in local style and the accommodation for this Sierra Nevada yoga hiking break is in a mixture of singles, twin shared rooms in simple apartments with shared bathrooms. There is also a spacious dorm room for 4 with en suite bathroom: and views of the mountains: The outside areas include a great swimming pool for relaxing beside after classes and after our hikes. There is also a great bbq and eating area with views of the mountains. _______________________________________________________________________ Itinerary Sunday Arrive from early afternoon 5:30pm – Meet up, briefing and Introductions 6:30pm – Yoga Class 8pm – Dinner Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 7:30 – 8:45 Morning Yoga Class 8:45 – 9:30 Breakfast 9:45 – 14:30 Day Hike 14:30 – 15:30 Lunch 16:00 – 18:00 Pool and relax time 18:30 – 19:45 yoga 20:00 Dinner Note: On Wednesday morning there will not be a yoga class, to give you a chance to have a lie in! The transfer time is approximately 2.5 hours. Note about flight delay: If your flight is delayed and you miss the scheduled pick up time, we can hold the transfer for up to one hour. However, if your flight is delayed for longer than this and therefore you will still not make the delayed pickup, you will need to arrange your own transport. On Saturday 28th (departure day) you should book a flight departing from 5pm onwards and we will arrange one group transfer at 12:00 for this time. We will only be providing one group transfer, so if your flight time is later in the evening, then you will have some extra time at Malaga airport, or time to explore Malaga. Total return cost for the group transfer to Malaga airport is no more than Euro 60 per person. Car hire is also an option to give more flexibility while you are there.

What we're about

Public Group

Welcome to Mountain Hikes! Sociable & Friendly Guided Hiking Breaks & Holidays

We are now close to 10,000 Mountain Hikers including several Meetup groups, Facebook and Website followers and all weekends and treks are still personally run by Samantha Yen Yau and Kevin Blissett.

We focus on smaller group breaks of around 15 to 20, because we believe this is the ideal group size to manage safely and give everyone the opportunity to meet each other and make friends. We have run larger groups, but we feel they can become impersonal and more difficult to manage safely.

We also specialise in areas that we know well and love, as we think this gives us the ability to give a more personal view of the areas where we are walking. We live in the Lake District and so we organise several breaks every year to this beautiful part of the country. We also know and love Scotland, so run several breaks to our favourite places there as well.

Kevin is a fully qualified International Mountain Leader, so this allows us to lead groups to some of our favourite and best known locations in Europe including the Alps and Spain.

Tea & Homemade Cake
A popular feature of all of our weekends has become Yen's homemade cakes. This is a delicious and rewarding way to finish all of our hikes.

Fitness
We welcome people of all nationalities and backgrounds, the only requirement is a love of the outdoors and a good level of fitness. Our hiking weekends, treks and yoga hiking weekends are aimed at people who are already reasonably fit and are happy to walk for most of the day in hilly and rocky environments.

RSVP numbers
You may notice that some breaks and trips are showing with more people booked than you can see on the Meetup page. This is because we also have other Meetup groups and our own website (www.mountainhikes.co.uk) where we take bookings.
