We are the Mountaineering Section of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. The premier rock climbing, ice climbing and mountaineering club serving the D.C. Metro area since 1944. We climb daily and have weekly events such as climbing at Carderock on Wednesdays in the climbing season. We also plan annual trips all over the country and in our backyard of DC.
A note on Membership and Events
Event Registration: Please note that for the majority of our events, you must be a member of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club - Mountaineering Section club (not just this Meet-Up group) in order to attend. Event sign-up will only be posted to our website, instead of Meetup. Our website is located at http://www.potomacmountainclub.org/. (http://www.potomacmountainclub.org) We continually try to ensure we cross-link our events for awareness or to promote climbing community functions. Please see our homepage for the most up-to-date information and event postings. For training clinics and weekend trips, participants must be club members, be in good standing, and sign the liability waiver.
PATC-MS Member Only Policy: Most events are for members of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club-Mountaineering Section only, in good standing with liability waivers on file, unless otherwise stated. This will be strictly enforced by event leaders. Any person who shows up to an event that is not a member will not be able to participate in the event. The two recurring events that are open to non-members are our monthly meetings and Carderock Wednesdays.
Who are we?
We are a diverse group of local climbers. Young and old, male and female, crag rat and alpinist, active and armchair types-We all enjoy climbing in its many varieties. We also share a common interest in promoting safe climbing, conserving the outdoor resource, developing new climbing skills, representing the DC Metro climbing community and having fun doing it! The Potomac Mountain Club, aka, is the Mountaineering Section of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, a non-profit corporation, devoted to responsible use of the outdoor resource.
What do we do?
CLIMB! Whether local or further afield, nearly every weekend our members are out climbing. Each year, several expedition-minded people, organize longer trips.
TEACH! We provide instruction for those who want to learn the basics and supplemental instruction through clinics given by members; we are not a school but learn by doing.
LEARN! We sponsor lectures by climbers. Guest lecturers have included: Hans Florine, Rosie Andrews, Fred Beckley, Greg Collins, John Harlin, Lynn Hill, Jeff Lowe, Paul Piana, Marc Richey, Doug Scott, Mark Wilford and Jimmy Chin.
