Please arrive early - we leave on time!
Stats:
~ 10 miles RT Loop.
~ 2600’ gain
~ Advanced and VERY strenuous - Experienced hikers ONLY, please.
~ 5-6 hours
The reason we call this an upside-down hike is because we are going downhill for the first part and uphill on the second.
Let's meet at the first turnout north of the Rattlesnake Trailhead. From there, we will head down to Newcomb Pass via the Rim Trail, take a couple minutes break and continue downhill towards Devore Campgrounds. However, we will not go all the way to Devore, instead, we will take a shortcut on the fire road down to West Fork. This is the turn-around point where we will take a longer break before heading back to the cars via the Rattlesnake Trail. There are no stream crossings nor bushwhacking!
Directions and Parking:
From the 210, exit Angeles Crest Hwy 2 and drive 14 miles north until you reach Mt. Wilson Road, which is also the location of the Red Box picnic area. Head up Mt. Wilson road to the top, following the circle to the right until you pass the Wilson Observatory gates – drive another minute or two until you come to a small turnout on the right side of the road. If this area is full, there is another similar turnout about 200 yards further down, also on the right side. The Kenyon Devore Trailhead (aka Rattlesnake Trailhead) is between these two parking areas.
Carpool:
Parking is limited. We can meet at Flanders Rd. and Milmada Dr., just north of the Angeles Crest off ramp from the 210 Fwy at 6:15am. For the two people who wants to carpool with me MUST be impervious to motion/sea/car sickness, nausea, and don't mind being tossed around as we make the sharp turns. YOU RIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK and will not hold me liable should we go over the guard rail. Others can meet at the location and follow along in their own cars if this is your first time to this location.
Message below if you want to meet at the carpool location.
What to bring:
Lots of water, electrolytes, poles, bug spray, etc.
