This is a Meetup group for people in the Los Angeles area who want to get together to discuss big ideas in psychology, business, productivity, happiness, and more. As a starting point, we’re focusing on the books that are part of The Next Big Idea Club (nextbigideaclub.com), a subscription non-fiction book club curated by Malcolm Gladwell, Susan Cain, Adam Grant, and Daniel Pink.
You don’t have to be a subscriber to participate in the Meetup, but if you’re interested in getting all the books, author interviews, video insights, and reading guides you can sign up at a special 10% discount for new Meetup members by clicking here: https://goo.gl/RzNhwb
A number of people in this group have expressed interest in reading and talking about one or more of the books being recommended for deeper understanding of and effectively responding to the issues of race and racism in this country. This is an area I have taught for many years for students and teachers in the 7-12 education environment, so I am happy to offer my facilitation to this group as well.
The books of greatest interest (based on a previous poll for this meetup group) are:
So You Want to Talk About Race (Ijeoma Oluo)
How to Be an Antiracist (Ibram X. Kendi)
For the discussion, I encourage you to read either of those as a starting point. However, I am sure that we could have a rich conversation with a number of other books as well, so if there is another book in this category that is pulling your attention, you will be welcome to bring your reading of that book into the conversation as well.
