What we're about

This is a Meetup group for people in the Los Angeles area who want to get together to discuss big ideas in psychology, business, productivity, happiness, and more. As a starting point, we’re focusing on the books that are part of The Next Big Idea Club (nextbigideaclub.com), a subscription non-fiction book club curated by Malcolm Gladwell, Susan Cain, Adam Grant, and Daniel Pink.

You don’t have to be a subscriber to participate in the Meetup, but if you’re interested in getting all the books, author interviews, video insights, and reading guides you can sign up at a special 10% discount for new Meetup members by clicking here: https://goo.gl/RzNhwb

Book Discussion!

Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals

About the book:
Drawing on the insights of both ancient and contemporary philosophers, psychologists, and spiritual teachers, The Guardian columnist Oliver Burkeman delivers an entertaining, humorous, practical, and ultimately profound guide to time and time management.

About the discussion:

We’ll gather online. To minimize unwanted disruption, Zoom URL will be messaged to those who have RSVPd.

You do not need to be a subscriber to the Next Big Idea to join the discussion (though it’s awesome! So why wouldn’t you be?) We do try to read the whole book before discussion, but we’re forgiving if not everybody made it all the way through. Come with as much as you’ve read.

Bonus - or when pressed for time: Listen to an author’s talk or podcast interview! It’s fun to hear the different perspectives raised by the author in different mediums.

The Sweet Spot: The Pleasures of Suffering and the Search for Meaning

About the book:

We go to movies that make us cry, or scream, or gag. We poke at sores, eat spicy foods, immerse ourselves in hot baths, and run marathons. Indeed, acclaimed psychologist Paul Bloom reveals how the right kind of suffering sets the stage for enhanced pleasure.
