5:45 – "Demystifying Data Science" by Dr. Alyson Wilson

6:30 – Networking / Cocktail

Abstract:
Data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence are the new buzz words -- they are being touted as the solution for everything from curing cancer to self-driving cars. Have you ever wondered how data science related to traditional statistics methods? Is data science just another name for "big data"? In this introductory overview talk, we will begin by discussing what data science is (and is not). We will then discuss some of the key principles of data science practice and conclude by examining the classes of problems and methods that are included in data science.

Bio:

She is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Her research interests include statistical reliability, Bayesian methods, and the application of statistics to problems in defense and national security. She is also the Director of the NCSU Data Science Initiative and coordinator of NCSU's Data-Driven Science faculty cluster. Prior to joining NCSU, Dr. Wilson was a Research Staff Member at the IDA Science and Technology Policy Institute (2011-2013), a faculty member in the Department of Statistics at Iowa State University (2008-2011), a Technical Staff Member in the Statistical Sciences Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory (1999-2008), and a a senior statistician and operations research analyst with Cowboy Programming Resources (1995-1999).
