This has become my tradition to spend at least one weekend at Cape Hatteras at the end of summer or early fall. I am delighted to have more “meetupers” join me in this endeavor. Here is a proposed agenda:
1. Depart Friday, Aug 31 and fly direct to the airport. There are no night operations allowed at Billy Mitchell field and no airport lighting, so we must land before dark. Civil twilight on Aug 31 at Hatteras will be until 7:56pm, which means that every aircraft must be on the ground by then. I will be flying from Manassas, VA. Folks further north and east may need to fly a longer distance, so plan accordingly.
2. There is a 1-mile hike from the airport to Frisco Campground run by National Parks Services. Last time I checked, they had 109 sites available on that weekend out of 117. Pretty impressive!!! It will start filling up closer to the Labor Day weekend, so I will keep checking.
3. For Saturday and Sunday I propose the following set of activities: renting kayaks, taking a cab ride to the lighthouse, hanging out on the beach, as well as taking a short 20 min flight to Ocracoke island and renting a golf cart to explore the town. There are no car rentals on the island and golf cart rentals are only allowed in the Hatteras village, so our only transportation option is a privately-owned taxi company which I heard a lot of good things about. It should not prevent us from enjoying the area fully.
4. On Monday I suggest to pack up and take a quick hop to Manteo/Dare county airport (KMQI) for refueling (no fuel is available on any of the island airports) and then just hop to First Flight and spend a few hours there.
We currently have 2 pilots interested in a trip:
Nikita (Cessna Skylane) flying out of Manassas (FULL)
Alan (Cirrus SR-20) flying out of Culpepper (FULL)
I hope more pilots will join. Passengers, please add yourself to wait list and I will do my best to match you with available pilots. I will keep everyone updated if somethings changes. Let us hope for a good weather.
