NE Seacoast Paddlers Pages

The NE Seacoast Paddlers Meetup Group is a resource for New England based paddling enthusiasts to correspond about paddling, post paddling events, provide paddling related information, post photos from events, create paddling related discussions etc. Although this group's events will be mostly in the Seacoast areas of MA, NH & ME it is not limited to these states. Any paddling enthusiasts is welcome to join whether you are a sea, surf, whitewater, recreational kayaker, canoeist or rafter. Events will be listed as to what type of watercraft is proper for the specific event.

Example:

  • Sea Kayaks only
  • Surf Kayaks only
  • Whitewater Kayaks or Rafts only
  • All which includes canoes, kayaks, rafts etc.


Kayaker Skill Levels - These skill levels are simply a guideline for you to self assess your abilities based on what are considered the areas of skill within the different categories. Your ability level may be stronger in some areas than others. Ie "Advanced intermediate"

  • Novice - Level 1 - Comfortable on flat water lakes, ponds & rivers only with winds less than 10mph. Knows basic forward and reverse paddle strokes and some boat control strokes.
  • Intermediate - Level 2 - Comfortable on light choppy water and light to moderate winds less than 15mph and light currents less than 2mph. Knows more advanced paddle strokes involving bracing, boat control in winds and currents. Has experience in performing a wet-exit with sprayskirt. Can perform self rescue with paddle float or assisted rescues. Has taken a class on kayak safety. Has some navigation and trip planning experience.
  • Advanced - Level 3 - Comfortable on moderately choppy water with wind and or moderate currents. Has proficiency in performing self rescues with paddle float or assisted rescues, has strong bracing skills and may be able to roll or re-enter and roll. Has proficiency in performing a wet-exit in various conditions with a sprayskirt. Has taken a more advanced safety and boat control class. Has experience in paddling and controlling a kayak in winds greater than 15mph and feels comfortable in currents up to 3mph. Has experience in launching and landing in surf less than 2 ft. Has more advanced navigation and trip planning skills utilizing charts, compass, gps etc.
  • Expert - Level 4 - Has all the abilities of an advanced Level 3 and then some. Feels comfortable in extreme conditions and has proficiency in boat control bracing, rolling, rescues, towing, wilderness first aid and can handle their kayak in winds above 20mph, seas greater than 4ft and strong currents. Has proficiency in Navigation, Leadership, Trip Planning and Organization for extended trips in various weather and conditions.
