Woodturned plates, platters, and bowls differ only in the depth of the work. The techniques and steps for creating them are virtually identical. In this class, we'll explore design concepts for each but concentrate on the basic woodturning techniques needed to transform a piece of wood into an attractive and functional finished piece. As the class project, each student will turn a small piece that they can take home!
Topics covered include:
– Lathe Safety
– Wood selection and preparation
– Tool selection and cutting techniques
– Workpiece holding
- Measuring thickness and depth
- Sanding, and finishing
Prerequisite :
– Lathe Safety & Tool Sign Off
– Recent turning experience (attendance at a Lathe Office Hours/Skill Enhancement is strongly recommended)
Safety:
- Wear closed-toed shoes, long pants, short sleeve shirts, and eye protection (both face shield and safety glasses are needed – bring yours or use ours).
-Tie back long hair, remove necklaces and watches. Wear a short-sleeve shirt, remove hoodies or loose-fitting sweaters. No earbuds, gloves, or anything else that can get wrapped up in the lathe.
