This class teaches the basic techniques and safety practices needed to begin making your own tools and knives on the 2" x 72" belt grinder and provides a signoff if you demonstrate a solid understanding of tool operation and safety practices during the class.
Our 72-inch grinder has a 2-inch belt and is specifically designed for precision grinding tools and knives. It gives you a lot of freehand grinding surfaces that get into the corners and curves of your piece. If you know a few simple techniques, it is safe, efficient, and a joy to use but there are some serious risks involved so a signoff is required to use the tool.
Sign off: 72 inch Belt Grinder (members-only)
Prerequisite: None, but minors under 16 may NOT take the class.
Minors 16-17: May take the class, but parents must remain in the lab and available in case needed or in an emergency.
SAFETY: Must wear leather shoes and non-synthetic clothes (synthetics will melt and can stick to your skin). Eye protection (goggles) are required. A dust mask or respirator is required.
NOTE: Due to Covid 19, you MUST provide your own goggles and respirator or mask!
