This year, PRIMER21 is a global collaboration between Speculative Futures Chapters from around the world, bringing together a diverse array of people to investigate the question “Now What?”.

A panel of NYC-based designers, artists, and educators weigh in on the question with an eye towards New York City's future.

The past year has been a radical departure from what many consider 'normal', causing us to pause and reflect on what is important and the question "Now What?". As a global community, we have been challenged to be patient yet ready to pivot, to persevere, to compromise, and most importantly to collaborate and act with compassion and concern for others. Yet a stark contrast has emerged between the remote experiences of a virtually operating world and the confusing, scary, and sometimes deadly physical day-to-day realities we find ourselves caught between, some more than others.

More than ever we are confronted with the harsh and oft-ignored truth that most of our systems and services were intentionally created to perpetuate inequality. Born of 19th-century biases and 20th-century institutions, we more clearly see that the foundations of our global civilization have been built upon colonialism, nationalism, racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, and religious bigotry.

In the face of these realities, many of us have looked into the mirror and questioned what it means to be part of a collective human family whose views and experiences contrast radically with our own.

A year later, we still seek better visions for tomorrow but are more aware of the work we need to do to reconcile our past so that together, we can co-create preferable futures. Across domains, geographies, and cultures we must examine how COVID has changed our daily lives and question how we want to live moving forward.

This panel discussion will explore these questions from the perspective of New York City.

• What lessons have we learned from COVID and how might they inform what we do now?

• How has the last year changed how we envision preferable futures, for ourselves, our communities, and more broadly for humanity?

• In what ways has COVID illuminated who benefits and who bears the costs of progress?

• (Most Importantly) How might we navigate to preferable futures for all, together?
