What we're about

The goal of the Women’s Coming Out Group is to provide a peer support group for women to discuss and share the experiences of questioning their sexuality and coming out. Topics of discussion will be suggested by members each meeting, and might include things like questioning your sexuality, accepting your sexuality, coming out while in a heterosexual relationship, coming out to your family, coming out as lesbian/gay after coming out originally as bisexual/pansexual (or the opposite), coming out as a BIPOC woman, dealing with internalized homophobia, and compulsive heterosexuality. We welcome women of all ages, ethnic and racial backgrounds, gender and queer identities.

We meet virtually once a week (via Zoom), so you don't have to be located in NY in order to join us!

NOTE: we have a MANDATORY "camera on" policy that you MUST comply with to join meetings. See more details below under "CAMERA ON"

If you'd like to donate to help offset the costs of the group, you can do so via Venmo @amandano2 ($1/person/month is recommended, but not required, we still welcome everyone).

GUIDELINES FOR THE GROUP

GOAL: The group’s goal is to provide a safe, accepting, and encouraging space for women who identify as lesbian, gay, trans, bisexual, questioning, and all other identities that fall under the LGBTQ+ umbrella throughout all aspects of the questioning or coming out processes. We are accepting of all women, regardless of how you identify or what step of the process you are in.

CAMERA ON POLICY: When logging on to a meeting, we request that you have your first name displayed, and that you turn your camera on for the first 30 minutes until we complete introductions. If you are unable to have your camera on and would like to request an exception be made for you, please contact Amanda via Meetup to see if this is possible. If you join the meeting and don't turn your camera on, we will unfortunately have to remove you due to previous incidents where people joined our meetings with the purpose of disrupting the group. Requiring everyone to have their cameras on helps us deal with disruptive participants more quickly and can continue with meetings.

BE RESPECTFUL: Be respectful of everyone in the group, by respecting others’ opinions and giving everyone a chance to speak. We encourage everyone to share, but if you’re not comfortable sharing you are also welcome to listen to others share. We do not tolerate any racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, or ageist language.

PRIVACY: Respect the privacy of others in the group by keeping what we discuss in meetings within the group, and please be sure not to out anyone that you might see outside of the group unless you know they are comfortable with that.

PERSONAL CONTACT: Please remember that members might not be comfortable sharing personal information or having communication outside of group meetings, especially if they are new to the group and just getting to know people, and please always be respectful of that by not pressuring anyone to share their contact information or by asking overly personal questions. If you are interested in speaking to a member privately outside of the group, we suggest sharing your information with them, and telling them that you'd be interested in connecting with them if they would like to do so. If they want to share their information or reach out to you, they can then do so. If anyone asks you to stop contacting them or says that they aren't comfortable with communicating outside of the group, please be respectful of that by ceasing contact. If you continue to reach out to them after you have been asked to stop, you will be asked to leave the group. Please also remember that this group is meant as a support and discussion group, and while we encourage friendships, this IS NOT A DATING GROUP, and it is inappropriate to approach other members for dating.

MEETINGS: If you need to leave the group early, that’s fine, but please do so without disrupting the group’s conversation.

ABOUT: Attendees are welcome to share as much or as little as they'd like, and no one is asked to share if they don't want to share or aren't ready to share. If you have any specific topics you'd like to discuss, we invite you to bring them to the group. We ask that you please respect the privacy of all members by not outing anyone you might see publicly (unless you know that they are out), by respecting that not everyone in the group will be interesting in exchanging contact information to connect outside of the group, and by not recording or taking screenshots of our meetings.
____________________________

DONATE: If you'd like to donate to help offset the costs of the group, you can do so via Venmo @amandano2 ($1/person/month is recommended, but not required, we still welcome everyone). Be sure to set it to be "private", or just put something generic like "Meetup" in the description if you don't want your donation to be visible to your friends.
