SPEAKER #1: DR. ANASSE BARI (NYU)
Professor Anasse Bari is a full time faculty member of computer science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science with a focus on Data Mining. Bari is a Fulbright scholar and previously was a university professor at the Computer Science Department of the George Washington University (GWU) in Washington D.C where his students voted him the professor of the year in 2014.
Dr. Bari has over ten years of experience in large-scale software architecture and design for both the public and private sectors. Anasse worked closely for many years with leadership across the World Bank Group in engineering enterprise data analytics projects. He was the recipient of the World Bank Group ITS Spot award for extraordinary efforts in service of the organization.
While at the World Bank, he attended an executive program at Stanford University's Institute of Design. His scientific research has been focused on predictive analytics, biologically inspired data analytics, and information retrieval. He is the author of several publications on data mining and the co-author of the book “Predictive Analytics for Dummies,” published by Wiley in 2016.
ABSTRACT #1: "Mining Alternative Data Sources for Making Financial Decisions"
Dr. Anasse Bari (NYU) will talk about Mining Alternative Data Sources to Seek Alpha for Making Financial Decisions. This talk will not be highly technical, but will include algorithms + high-level highlights of the technology. Dr. Bari will highlight use cases where alternative datasets have been mined using machine learning algorithms and how they help in understanding movements in the stock market. Dr. Bari along and his graduate student and former GE software engineer Aniruddh Khera will close by highlighting their research team project - using news articles and micro-blogs to understand movements of financial markets.
SPEAKER #2: MUTISYA NDUNDA (FOUNDER/CEO, ALPHA VERTEX)
Mutisya has over 15 years of experience in the financial services including investment banking, private equity and market making. Prior to founding Alpha Vertex in 2015, he was the Head of Strategy & Business Development for Bloomberg Enterprise Solutions for 5 years. Before Bloomberg, Mutisya served as the Head of North America Business Development and Chief of Staff for Susquehanna International Groups proprietary trading businesses.
Mutisya holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University and a Master’s Degree in Financial Engineering from Cornell University.
ABSTRACT #2: "Artificial intelligence for Absolute Return Investment Strategies"
Mutisya Ndunda (Founder/CEO, Alpha Vertex) will speak about using machine learning techniques to forecast time series in order to build investment strategies. Time series are an essential part of financial analysis and as the volume, velocity and complexity of financial data increases. Machine learning techniques hold great promise for time series analysis and offers a way to separate the signal from the noise, even when the noise can seem overwhelming. During his presentation, Mutisya will go through an accessible, non-trivial example of machine learning with financial time series.
