What we're about

NYC Backwoods Adventurers is for all levels of adventure enthusiasts looking to escape the city for hiking, climbing, rafting, cycling, paddling, beer drinking around a bonfire, cabin laziness, and general shenanigans without the daunting expectation of completing 20 miles or 5 peaks in one day. Yes, we're looking for a challenge but we also want to enjoy the scenery and each other company.

We'll also looking to bring the backwoods into the city....think gear swaps, adventure documentary screenings, meetups with professional adventurers, pub crawls, and all manner of enjoyable times.

So sign up, show your interest, meet some people, and help us get a great thing going.

Minnewaska Preserve: Rainbow Falls, Upper Awosting & Mossy Glen (6 mile R/T)

I had to reschedule this hike from late April to June due to a minor car mishap. Well worth the wait!

  • 6 miles round-trip (with approx. 690 ft. elevation)

  • Approx. 3 hours hike time (with optional break for snack, lunch)

  • Optional: Litchfield Ledge detour scenic vista could add another 1.1 mi. stretch bringing the total hike to 8.25 miles total; Group consensus decides!

  • Please Note Minnewaska Preserve charges $10 per carload admission.

  • Drinks & food afterwards @Arrowwood Farm in Accord, NY.

  • Covid-19 PSA: Please don't RSVP to join this hike if you've been exposed to anyone who has tested positive within the last 5 days or if you have shown symptoms in the last few days; we'll be socially distanced throughout the hike and day.

We'll convene between 9:45 and 10:00 a.m. at the Lower Awosting Lot parking area just off of State Route 44 // 55 (Main St.) in Minnewaska State Preserve, Kerhonkson, NY. The park is privately owned and rangers preserve the park quite well, hence the admission fee of $15 per person.

Details:

  1. From the Awosting Carriage Road at the gate, we'll take a left on the Mossy Glen Trail (yellow markers) and hike along the lush Peters Kill creek about 1.5 miles. Just above the Awosting C.R., we'll make a left on the bisecting Blueberry Run Trail (blue markers) and hike up about 230 to 250 feet of elevation to the 1,805 ft. ridge line of the Upper Awosting C.R., where we'll make a right and catch two vistas from ledges overlooking Huntington Ravine, Peters Kill and the Catskills in the distance. Here would be a nice spot to take a break for lunch, a snack, Cliff bar or chips n' hummus, whatever you fancy!
  2. Depending how much time we have on the day at this point, we'll take a group consensus for wanting to take a detour to see another luxe view point, Litchfield Ledge, which is less than 1 mile further out along the ridge line.
  3. In any event, we'll descend from the Upper Awosting down and around the Huntington Ravine and check out Rainbow Falls before we circle back on the Lower Awosting C.R. - where we can dip our feet into the water or pat your face with the cool Peters Kill water! From the descent of the falls it's a 2.3 mile back track to the parking area that's a flat stretch for the most part, making for a quick return.

**This is a moderate, not too strenuous day hike with under 700 feet of overall elevation. This group keeps to a collective group pace moving at the speed of the slowest hikers. Do not feel like you have to race or keep up with the overall group. However, that does not mean we will be making a dozen stops along the way for photos or otherwise, but we do like to take a few stops for snacks, water and the key viewpoints along the way!

**Please post in the message boxes if you have a car, will be driving up from the city and would be willing to offer a ride to anyone seeking to carpool! Message me DM with any questions!

**Rain forecasts normally cancel the hike. Will monitor the app and forecast online. If it's more than a 45% rain forecast a couple days in advance I'll most likely reschedule the hike. In any event it's best to wear boots or high fitting trail shoes, spacks/gaiters based on snow melt and mud.
