What we're about

This is a group for folks who love to get into nature but fall into one or more of these categories: 1) Somewhat daunted by 20 mile, 5000 ft elevation-gain day hikes; 2) New to hiking and camping; 2) Just like to amble along and enjoy the scenery and the company rather than rush to a destination. We do chill day-hikes, overnights, and just overall chill activities that will get us outside from time to time.

Note: Outdoor activities can lead to injuries. This meetup and organizers are not responsible for any sort of member injuries that happen at or after any events. Please be responsible and take care of yourself!

Not So Urban Athletics: Snowshoeing in Lake Minnewaska State Park

Minnewaska State Park Preserve

Do you believe global warming is a myth? Come on now, we all know you're smarter than that. Mother Nature is slow to admit defeat and still gives us a little bit of snow once in a while. Let's take advantage of that and head out for a bit of snowshoeing in upstate New York's Shawangunk mountain range.

Starting off in the Peter’s Kill parking area of Lake Minnewaska State Park, we're going on a four-mile snowshoeing hike that will first take us along the banks of the beautiful Peter’s Kill stream and its three miniature waterfalls. We'll continue our trek uphill past stacked slabs of quartz conglomerate and by the remains of a long abandoned water-powered mill and on to the 65 foot tall Awosting Falls. If conditions are cold enough, the waterfall forms a frozen volcano-like shape that grows and changes with every new stream of water. From the falls we’ll snowshoe back to our starting point along wide and gently sloping carriage roads that will allow us plenty of time to think about the after hike refreshments to come.

Okay, where do I get gear and what does it cost ...

You're going to rent your snowshoes in New Paltz at Rock & Snow outfitters; the cost is $20 for the day including poles. All rentals require credit card deposit, no other deposit will be accepted! A signed liability form is required for ALL rentals. The store opens at 8:00AM, below is the address. Remember, it's about a 20 minute drive from the store to the trailhead so give yourself enough time:

Not So Urban Athletics: Minnewaska State Park Mossy Glen Loop Hike

Minnewaska State Park Preserve

Who is afraid of Old Man Winter? Not I! It could be 15 degrees out and the middle of a blinding snowstorm and I'd much rather be outside than sitting inside on the couch twiddling my thumbs. But let's hope that isn't the weather for this week's hike, I'd still prefer a mild, winter bluebird day.

Today we'll be tackling the Minnewaska Mossy Glen loop. Get your sleep the night before because this trek is a bit of a long one. A few highlights...our travels will take us along an attractive frozen stream, climbs to panoramic viewpoints while we teeter at the edge of dramatic cliffs, and take in views of a picturesque waterfall.

The important stuff...

• By RSVPing for this event, you agree to the following waiver of liability https://bit.ly/3atj0C5.

• This will be an INTERMEDIATE level hike of about 8.5 miles.

• Dress in layers of non-cotton clothing, wear waterproof boots and pants, a hat and gloves, bring water, a packed lunch and/or snacks, and sunscreen. MICROSPIKES ARE MANDATORY!

• Rain cancels the event.

• RSVP only if you seriously plan to attend as space is limited.

• There is a parking fee of $10.00 per car.
