NY LASER is a series of lectures and presentations on art and science projects, in support of Leonardo/ISAST’s LEAF initiative (Leonardo Education and Art Forum). Former LEAF Chairs Ellen K. Levy and Patricia Olynyk co-direct these presentations on behalf of the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts and Washington University in St. Louis respectively. Space is limited, so please rsvp by sending an email to olynyk@wustl.edu. There will be feature presentations by Ellen Pearlman and Cynthia Pannucci.
Ellen Pearlman is a doctoral candidate at the School of Creative Media at Hong Kong University and Director and Curator of the Volumetric Society of New York. She is also the President of Art-A-Hack, which brings artists and technologists together to make something new. Ellen will discuss her recent project “Noor,” a fully immersive brain opera in a 360-degree theatre, where a performer launches video, a sonic environment, and a libretto through brainwaves. The world premier was at ISEA Hong Kong and then it was shown at the Microwave Festival last spring. Noor (which translates as “light” in Arabic) asks, through metaphor, analogy, sound, text, light, movement, and the use of brain sensors and audience interaction: “Is there a place in human consciousness where surveillance cannot go?” Cynthia Pannucci is the founder and director of Art & Science Collaborations Inc. (ASCI), an international non-profit organization based in New York City since 1988, which was instrumental in revitalizing the art & technology movement in the United States during the 90's. ASCI is known for producing formative symposia, exhibitions, and resource tools for nurturing this exciting multidisciplinary field. Among other activities, ASCI is currently adding a new art-sci humanitarian focus to its work with the development of a "Kinetic Water Sculpture Project" to encourage the usage of renewable energy to combat the negative effects of rising levels of CO2 in the atmosphere and in our oceans. Cynthia will discuss this project, in addition to the "Now We Sea" exhibition, which aims to boost public awareness and understanding of today's ocean health crisis.
