Food, Agriculture and Climate Change: Carbon Farming, Gardening & Food Justice

Details

• What we'll do
This event will be the third in a series about "Food, Agriculture and Climate Change". These events do not require that you attend the other ones. In the 2 previous events on this theme, attendees have been learning about "regenerative agriculture" which depends on soil that can store (sequester) carbon. The health of our food supply depends on the health of the soil and, healthy soil also reduces climate change by removing carbon from the atmosphere. As it so happens, soil that is rich in carbon and pesticide free produces healthy food. Some farming techniques are better than others for the health of the soil and the food that it produces. Large industrial farms that rely on chemical fertilizers and pesticides are harmful for the soil and the food that it produces. This is one of many reasons that it's important to support local farms and consider joining a CSA.

We are excited to announce that one of our speakers on Feb. 5 will be Alexis Baden-Mayer who is the Political Director of Organic Consumers Association. She is working on developing policy on all levels to promote healthy and sustainable farming techniques. Come to hear what she has to say. We will also talk about why CSAs are important, and what a wonderful NYC organization called West Side Campaign Against Hunger is doing to eliminate hunger and reducing food waste. And we'll hear from a very experienced Community Gardener who also teaches children about gardening.

Watch this space for updates about the event.
