What we're about

This is a hang for jazz musicians who want to take their playing to the next level in a supportive environment of like-minded peers. Jazz is community music. If you want to get good at it, you need to get out and play with others! Not finding many outlets to gain this valuable experience, I created this group for us to help each other grow our skills. The main focus is on jam sessions, but we'll also get together for live shows, or just hang out and share our love for jazz. Looking forward to playing with you! ~ Alice

Public Jam Session!

The Douglass

WHAT: Announcing an exciting initiative for the new year, something many of us have been waiting for – a public jam session! And it's FREE. WHERE: The event will be held in the back room of The Douglass, a fantastic pub in the Park Slope / Gowanus area of Brooklyn. Easy to get to, it's near many subways and a short walk from Barclays Center. WHEN: Saturdays 3-6 PM. The plan is to have quarterly sessions, but depending on how things go, we can potentially do every two months. WHO (Besides YOU!): Bring your friends and family for an afternoon delight of live jazz, watching you perform while enjoying food and drinks. There's no audience better than our nearest and dearest, so let's round 'em up and fill up the room! (The patrons of The Douglass are also welcome to listen.) HOW: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. We'll have a "soft" first public jam by working on predetermined tunes (important titles that aren't too crazy). This way everyone comes prepared and in zero danger of being caught off guard with a tune they don't know being called on the spot. See setlist below. BACKLINE: 2 guitar amps, bass amp, drums, Yamaha P-255 stage piano (88-Key fully weighted) There is a 6 PLAYER LIMIT per tune as follows: • Rhythm Section: 1 keyboard, 1 guitar, 1 bass, 1 drums • NO LIMIT for lead instruments For now, please sign up for NO MORE THAN 1 TUNE PER MUSICIAN in order to give everyone opportunities to play. If there are still spots open later, you'll be able to select more tunes then. (UPDATE 1/14: You can now sign up for 2 TUNES.) HOW TO SIGN UP TO PLAY: LEAVE YOUR NAME, INSTRUMENT AND TUNE SELECTION ON THE COMMENTS SECTION BELOW. There's no way to make the sign-ups automated, so the list will be updated manually. TO ATTEND ONLY: Simply sign up without claiming a tune (bring your instrument anyway – maybe you'll get to sit in last minute ;)). IMPORTANT: TO AVOID DUPLICATE SIGN-UPS, PLEASE REVIEW THE COMMENTS SECTION TO MAKE SURE YOUR INSTRUMENT AND TUNE SPOTS AREN'T ALREADY TAKEN. Don't rely on the setlist as it's not updated in real time. Once you know who you're playing with, feel free to communicate how you might want to perform together, like intros, tempo, style, trades, endings, comping between piano & guitar, etc. AT THE JAM: The setlist will be performed in the exact order as listed below. Time yourself so that you're present for your turn. It's also good etiquette for you to stick around to support the other players, so please consider staying for the whole jam, or at least try not to come just for your turn and split once you're finished. :) SETLIST & PLAYERS 1. "All of Me" - Harmonica - Wally - Alto Sax - Dan Schlesinger - Bass - Pablo - Drums - Fernando 2. "Blue Monk" - Clarinet - Jon Hill - Guitar - Jason Casper - Bass - Peter Kjaerulff - Drums - Colin Devine 3. "In a Sentimental Mood" - Alto Sax - Marty Heinsdorf - Drums - Colin Devine 4.
