BIM IMPLEMENTATION is more than a simple clause in a contract requiring the technology’s use. BIM implementation poses a complex new set of risk-allocation and management challenges. Fortunately, the industry has caught up to the technology, and several sets of BIM contract addendums and implementation guides have emerged from various organizations. Despite the new thinking required, BIM has been proven to be a better way of building and is more likely to reduce claims and legal issues when handled properly. This presentation will discuss the new contract forms and case studies on BIM claims to educate attendees on how to effectively manage the risks in the BIM process.

Rebecca McWilliams is both an attorney and architect. She focuses her practice on assisting building owners, design, and construction professionals with legal technology challenges. Rebecca provides custom contract services, BIM Execution Planning for teams, technology-based process consulting, and risk management for alternative project delivery methods. Prior to pursuing her legal career, Rebecca practiced architecture for over ten years, developing hands-on expertise as a Director of BIM and project architect. She then worked as an attorney for a large Boston law firm’s construction and contract law group, providing insurance defense and custom contracts for building professionals. Now as the CEO of Independent Design, she works with BIM users like you nationwide to develop custom BIM project standards, processes and contracts.
