Interfacing Music with Ruby
When you think about programming for music, Ruby may not be the first language that comes to mind, but it can be a natural choice given Ruby's flexibility and expressiveness. In 2010, Ari Russo began writing a set of Ruby Gems to facilitate music-making and artistic performance. His talk will begin with a history and overview of MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) and other modes of music control. He will demonstrate the Gems he's written as well as some projects of his which utilize them such as the Diamond Arpeggiator.
Ari has been coding with Ruby since 2004 and professionally since 2008. In 2014, he performed in the US and Europe as a live video artist using Ruby-based software and also released a record of his music "Wild Metals" on the Valcrond Video label. He is a co-organizer of Monthly Music Hackathon NYC and is currently a senior developer at Paperless Post.
