DESCRIPTION

WHILE UNDERSTANDING DATA SCIENCE HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER, IT HELPS TO HAVE A GUIDE TO HELP YOU GET STARTED ON YOUR JOURNEY. IN THIS FREE HANDS-ON WORKSHOP WITH GALVANIZE, YOU’LL LEARN THE VERY BASICS OF DATA SCIENCE VIA THE PYTHON PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE.

Our community of staff, students, and professional instructors will guide you through the elementary aspects of Pandas, Matplotlib, statsmodels, and a little scikit-learn, some of the most popular tools in the data science toolbox. We will investigate and visualize data, develop a linear model, and play around in the sandbox if we have time.

What to Bring?
Your laptop and charger

Please have the following installed:

  • Python 2.7 or 3.5
  • Git (should be okay if you have a Mac)
  • Anaconda for Jupyter Notebooks

What You’ll Learn
• Fundamental concepts of modeling: inference, prediction, and generalizability
• How to create a linear regression model on some real data
• How to use Pandas, StatsModels, and Matplotlib within a Python Jupyter notebook

Meetup Schedule
6:30 pm – Networking & Announcements
6:40 pm – Models: the fundamental concepts
6:50 pm – Setting up your computer in Anaconda for Jupyter Notebooks
7:00 pm – Getting started with Pandas, Matplotlib, and StatsModels
7:30 pm – Exploring a data set and building a linear model
8:15 pm – Wind down, sandboxing & Q&A
8:30 pm – HARD STOP

Prerequisites
This is a beginner workshop, but some background on Python in data science would certainly help. We recommend the following options: Zed Shaw's Learn Python the Hard Way
