Dear Sangha,
This Tuesday, we continue our guest speaker program. This month’s guest speaker is Kathy Cheney. She will lead the meditation and present a Dharma talk on the Buddhist concept of Mudita, or sympathetic joy. Mudita meditation practice is used to cultivate appreciative joy at the success and good fortune of others, and helps us counteract the resentment, jealousy, or envy we often experience at another's success. The practice of Mudita can lift our hearts and minds out of their preoccupation with insufficiency and feelings of lack. As a result, we may begin to feel a greater sense of gratitude for our own lives and generosity towards others.
Kathy has been practicing meditation since 2000. She has taught children in diverse settings for the last 20 years, including working with Spirit Rock Meditation Center's annual Family Retreat. Kathy has sat many long retreats at Spirit Rock and Gaia House in England. She practices in both the Vipassana and Zen traditions and is part of the San Quentin Zen Sangha. Kathy also volunteers at San Francisco County Jail teaching meditation to women. Her primary teacher is Gil Fronsdal.
Please feel invited to bring a friend along with you to the sit on Tuesday. Our speaker nights provide a great opportunity for us to invite people to the Sangha who may be new to meditation or are interested in starting a meditation practice.
