Cloudland Canyon June 2, 2018
Waterfalls, overlooks, boulders, cascading creeks... Cloudland Canyon State Park in Georgia has it all! This park is just outside of Chattanooga. We will be hiking The Overlook Trail (1 mile) and Sitton's Gulch/Waterfalls Trail (6 miles round trip) on Saturday. The Sitton's Gulch Trail features 600 metal, grated stairs that we will venture down and then back up, for a total of 1,200 stairs. You can rest along the way as needed. Dogs don't always like walking on metal grates, so if you bring a dog, you may need to carry your dog on the stairs. We will be camping on the 2 mile Backcountry Loop Trail. Tents and hammocks only- no RVs. The campsite has a central spigot, a stream, good tree canopy, and good hangs available for hammock camping. Leashed pets allowed. Saturday's hike will total about 10 miles (includes our 1 mile hike to the campsite and the 2 mile Backcountry Loop). On Sunday, we will be hiking the West Rim Loop Trail (5 miles) which has beautiful overlooks. The trails we are hiking are rated moderate-strenuous. A few notes: This is a good trip for beginning backpackers. You will have the opportunity to test your gear (tent, sleeping bag, mattress, stove, etc.) without having to lug it more than 1-2 miles. The Backcountry Loop campsite is a mile from the parking area. Then we just walk around the 2 mile loop to pick our spots. I have reserved several sites, and we can find ones that adjoin. We can hike the trails (Sitton's, West Rim, etc.) without the weight of our packs. Yay! All you need is a daypack with lunch, snacks, and water. I walk at a relaxed pace and take time to enjoy the scenery and take pics along the way. For those who desire longer trails and more hiking, the Backcountry Loop is adjacent to the Cloudland Connector Trail (14 miles out, 14 miles back). We usually ride together instead of everybody taking separate cars. If you ride with somebody, it is considerate to chip in $ for gas. I will post info. on where to meet, which will probably be my condo in Brentwood.

What we're about

Meet others in Nashville, middle Tennessee, and beyond, interested in backpacking. At regular monthly meetings at REI we discuss trails, equipment, tents, hammocks, packs, stoves, cameras and photography, clothing, weather, wildlife, first aid, food, recipes, etc., and find fellow hikers to take trips with. Our hikes are multi-day events that require a great deal of work by hike organizers. PLEASE RSVP WITH INTEGRITY; if you can't do that, this might not be the Meetup group for you.
