I've been building hand drums for 19 years and have helped many people create their own sacred drum, a process I fervently believe in, especially when the reason to build the drum is for use in ceremony. As I teach you how to physically create your drum, I also talk about the drum; when to use it, drum etiquette and technique, styles and songs. I like to meet with workshop participants after the drums are ready in order to wake them up. It takes about 5 days for a drum to dry, in which time it should not be played.
Rick McBride is mixedblood Ani'yunwi'ya (Tsalagi, or Cherokee) who has walked the Red Road for over 35 years. He was named Cante Lute (Schan-tay Lou-tuh) by the spirits through his sundance chief, which means Red Heart. He is a 17-year sundancer and has been traditionally trained and authorized to lead ceremonies, such as inipi (purification lodge), prayer with the Canunpah (Pipe), drum healing and so forth. He has been publicly teaching these ways for 13 years now.
