Join leader Donna McKenzie for a morning of relaxed birding in Musqueam Park and out to the Fraser River trail. 9am to noon.

Beginners especially are encouraged to join this field trip.

The number of participants is capped at 15. April and May are peak times for returning local bird species and a stopover spot for birds flying further north. Bring binoculars if you have them, and dress for the weather. The ground can be uneven and mucky but is mostly flat. The route is a mix of gravel or dirt trails and open fields. This trip goes rain or shine, unless it’s really pouring.

Please bring a folding chair, and your favourite portable art implements and paper. The paid parking lot is 130 meters from our meeting location. Our meeting location is 180 meters to the public bathrooms.

Join us for this family-friendly accessible event that combines nature journaling and birding. Many people know that you can identify birds through their calls and songs. Nature journaling and birding together can help you hone your observational and listening skills to improve your birding skills and become a better birder. In this hands-on workshop at Jericho Beach Park, trip leaders Joanna Chin and Neill Vanhinsberg will introduce the language of birdsong. We will sit and listen to our soundscapes and learn how to transcribe them in our nature journals. Topics we will cover are: Is the bird singing or calling? Can you describe the sound? We will make field sketches of bird vocalizations and try to identify the birds that we are listening to.

Let’s draw inspiration from Birds and create Art and Community! In this experiential workshop, trip leaders Joanna Chin and Neill Vanhinsberg will introduce the concept of nature journaling. We will improve our birding skills by combining the art of journaling and birding. In this session, we will be learning different drawing techniques and drawing inspiration from wildlife and the surrounding landscapes at Iona Beach Regional Park. Nature Journaling is an open-ended exploration that integrates art and science to document and better understand a world that is unfolding around us. Through nature journaling, we study and get intimate with birds, animals, plants, insects to deepen our observational skills. This hands-on experiential learning workshop contains elements of practical tips and sensory awareness to develop curiosity, wonder, and attention about the natural world.
