As a book club, we rarely read multiple books in a series because it can be daunting for new members to have to get through more than one book for the meetup. That being said, this book club remains an autonomous collective not a self-perpetuating autocracy (props if you got that joke) and we all really loved the first books in these two series and wanted to keep reading together!
For this month, we are reading book 2 of Nora Robert’s Chronicles of the One series – “Of Blood and Bone”. I’m getting this event posted in April so anyone that wants to read book one first has plenty of planning time. In book one, life as we know it had pretty much been destroyed and oh yeah, magic is a thing too. I guess this is Paranormal Dystopian. For those that attended the September 2018 book club meetup, I am THRILLED to report that from all appearances this book does include more about the folks in New Hope. We were on fire for an entire series just about this town and these folks solving problems, creating community, and just going about "post-end-of-the-world" lives!
Also - as a very early head’s up – we will be reading “The Obelisk Gate” by N.K. Jemisin, book 2 of the Broken Earth trilogy – for September 2019. Feel free to go check out book 1 of that series as well. These are the only “series” books for this year – promise!
Book summary from Goodreads:
They look like an everyday family living an ordinary life. But beyond the edges of this peaceful farm, unimaginable forces of light and dark have been unleashed.
Fallon Swift, approaching her thirteenth birthday, barely knows the world that existed before—the city where her parents lived, now in ruins and reclaimed by nature since the Doom sickened and killed billions. Traveling anywhere is a danger, as vicious gangs of Raiders and fanatics called Purity Warriors search for their next victim. Those like Fallon, in possession of gifts, are hunted—and the time is coming when her true nature, her identity as The One, can no longer be hidden.
In a mysterious shelter in the forest, her training is about to begin under the guidance of Mallick, whose skills have been honed over centuries. She will learn the old ways of healing; study and spar; encounter faeries and elves and shifters; and find powers within herself she never imagined. And when the time is right, she will take up the sword, and fight. For until she grows into the woman she was born to be, the world outside will never be whole again.
This month's restaurant selection:
We’ve had many discussions about what kinds of food are just MIA from the Greater Tampa Bay food scene. Russian and eastern European are frequent features on our wish list but – huzzah! We have a new Russian/Ukrainian place - Babushka’s. Let’s go check it out. Just looking at the menu is making me drool. I have a serious passion for borscht (yeah, I know I’m weird).
Not sure about book club or never been to one before?
Read the book (or some of the book). Come to the Meetup. Eat yummy food and chat with folks about what you thought about the book. REPEAT!
Didn’t finish/hated this book?
Come to the Meetup anyway! If you didn't finish - just be aware, there will be spoilers. If you hated it, come and rant! We have some of the best conversations about what we didn’t like about books!
