NNO Book Club: The Three-Body Problem

When you say “nerd” book club, classic science fiction is probably the first thing that leaps to most people’s minds. Oddly, we don’t actually read that much sci-fi in this book club but we’ve liked most of what we have read. We also are fans of non-American/Western European authors as it is nice to get a different perspective. With that in mind, this month we are reading The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin, translated by Ken Liu, who we have read before and will read again.

The Three-Body Problem is the first chance for English-speaking readers to experience the Hugo Award-winning phenomenon from China's most beloved science fiction author, Liu Cixin.

Set against the backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion. The result is a science fiction masterpiece of enormous scope and vision.

Okay, we all voted and decided August was THE month we are actually going to start in-person meetings again. We have done Yummy House Bistro before, but not this location.

Read the book (or some of the book). Come to the Meetup. Eat yummy food and chat with folks about what you thought about the book. REPEAT!

Like many in this group – I read WAY too much and am much too frugal to buy books for all my book club reads. All books we select have a decent number of copies (at least 3-4 across all formats) at both the Hillsborough and Pinellas County Library.
