NNO Book Club: Snow Crash

Details

Edited Monday Jan. 3 - This has been moved to an online meeting. Here's hoping we are able to meet in person for Feb!

Our first book club meeting of 2022 and it seems like a good time to circle back to a long time “nerd” classic. If you’ve been eyeing Facebook, I mean “meta”, with growing suspicion or thought maybe Ready Player One’s Oasis seems a little too near future for your tastes – why not join us in exploring the book that coined the term “metaverse” and introduced a lot more ideas that are now tropes of the sci-fi/cyberpunk genre way back in the early 1990s. (Side note: Is cyberpunk still a current genre? Or are we just calling it something else these days…cyberpunk does seem very “Hackers”, which was also early 90s so yeah….)

ANYWAY – without further rambling from me…Our book for January 2022 - Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson.

Book summary from Goodreads
In reality, Hiro Protagonist delivers pizza for Uncle Enzo's CosoNostra Pizza Inc., but in the Metaverse he's a warrior prince. Plunging headlong into the enigma of a new computer virus that's striking down hackers everywhere, he races along the neon-lit streets on a search-and-destroy mission for the shadowy virtual villain threatening to bring about infocalypse. Snow Crash is a mind-altering romp through a future America so bizarre, so outrageous… you'll recognize it immediately.

This month's restaurant selection
This month we will be at Sea Dog Cantina in Clearwater. While I have not been to this location, I have been to the Sea Dog Brewing Company location in Treasure Island and the food was outstanding. This location has some Mexican-inspired nosh and drinks for those that would like to partake.

***Not sure about book club or never been to one before? ***
Read the book (or some of the book). Come to the Meetup. Eat yummy food and chat with folks about what you thought about the book. REPEAT!

***Not sure where to get the book? ***
All books we select have a decent number of copies (at least 3-4 across all formats) at both the Hillsborough and Pinellas County Library. And, of course, you can always buy a copy.

Didn’t finish/hated this book?
Come to the Meetup anyway! If you didn't finish - just be aware, there will be spoilers. If you hated it, come and rant! In my experience, the books that generate the best conversations and the books we really love are rarely the same books.
