MS Walk

What is MS?

MS is thought to be an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS consists of the brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves. Surrounding and protecting the nerve fibers of the CNS is a fatty tissue called myelin, which helps nerve fibers conduct electrical impulses.

In MS, myelin is lost in multiple areas, leaving scar tissue called sclerosis. These damaged areas are also known as plaques or lesions. Sometimes the nerve fiber itself is damaged or broken.

Myelin not only protects nerve fibers, but makes their job possible. When myelin or the nerve fiber is destroyed or damaged, the ability of the nerves to conduct electrical impulses to and from the brain is disrupted, and this produces the various symptoms of MS.

What does this have to do with this meetup?

I just finished volunteering for a second MS Challenge Walk. I met young beautiful people and middle aged people with the disease. Some you would hardly know have the disease while others are so debilitating that they can't go on a boat for fear that they will have a seizure or have a hard time standing. This could happen to anyone, even you or a loved one or friend.

I set up a special bank account and enabled the paypal features. Every penny donated to the account will go to the next MS Walk. I will post regular updates on how much is raised. I also set up a hall of fame for those individuals who donate in a certain range as follows:

Bronze - $5 - $24.99
Silver - $25 - $49.99
Gold - $50 - $99.99
Platinum - $100 - $499.99
Diamond - Greater than $499.99
