Do you worship the Greek gods, and would you consider yourself a polytheist? Have you *wanted* to worship Greek gods, but you don't know where to start? This meetup is for you!
Let's get together for coffee every six to eight weeks in New Haven. I am starting this group to build local community (if one exists), and while I have ideas about what that might look like (reading common texts and discussing them; doing small and simple libations), it takes a community to make an idea become something awesome. As soon as we have a few people in the group, we can get started!
Hellenism, Hellenismos, Hellenic Polytheism, Dodekatheism/Dodecatheism, Olympianism, and other designations refer to religious movements that reconstruct ancient Greek polytheisms. Many started(-ish) in the 1990s, and they range from revivalist (allowing more modern innovations) to reconstructionist (strictly based on historical practice). The ritual practices of Hellenism are different from those in other New Religious Movements like Wicca or Neopaganism. People who use reconstructionist methods, yet wouldn't describe themselves as Hellenists or practitioners of Hellenismos, are also welcome — syncretism is awesome!
As far as community standards go, racism, homophobia, misogyny, transphobia, and the like will not be tolerated. Solon's Tenets (available at the Perseus Classics Library or in many places on the web) are a good baseline standard for ethical behavior.
