Let's head down to Marlboro this week and have dinner at the Raccoon Saloon. We will have our own room and there's lots of good things to eat, you can check the menu options here: https://www.raccoonsaloonmarlboro.com/menu-specials ***AFTER DINNER we can walk down the road to the Roots and Blues Session at The Falcon Underground. If we're lucky we'll get to hear our very own Charles playing a few tunes on his electric blues harmonica with the Petey Hop house band..... but no guarantees, and Charles never knows what time he will get to play. Raccoon Saloon has agreed to give us separate checks - please remember to bring CASH to pay. Thanks to Al for organizing this one!!
This is a VERY special treat, organised and hosted by Charles and now happening the Friday AFTER the Memorial Day weekend. Sterling Hill Mining Museum and Zinc Mine Visit Ogdensburg, NJ Rock and Load!!! Many of us enjoyed our past Geology Hike with Charles, so we are going to try a different type of event that will take us on an underground guided tour into a famous zinc mine in NJ. This terrain is underlain by rocks that are older than dirt – roughly 1.1 billion years old and are world famous for their fluorescence under short-wave UV light! We’ll have the proper equipment so you can enjoy this unique feature of the rock mass. Thus, on Friday 31 May we will travel to Ogdensburg, NJ and have a private guided tour of the Sterling Hill Underground Mine and Mining Museum. The tour will cover the mining history and geology of the region and show you how underground mining was conducted. This region is known globally for its famous fluorescent minerals (willemite, calcite, wollastonite) which you will experience in the mine itself. Part of the orebody, illuminated with shortwave UV light, is shown above. For those who want to play with rocks (and who wouldn't) - after the tour you can collect rocks for an extra fee of $5 + $1.50/pound taken. Charles will supply some hammers - you can't bring yours unless it is a proper rock hammer (no claw hammers, please). For more info go to https://www.sterlinghillminingmuseum.org/ The tour starts at 1pm but plan to get there 10 minutes or so ahead of time. The tour normally costs $11 each for seniors but we will simply make donations at the end to help support the museum. The mine location is about an hour and a half from New Paltz and therefore we encourage car pooling. Limit 25. Guests are welcome, but no dogs, hamsters or pogo sticks. We will send update notes as we get closer so all spots are guaranteed filled for this amazing experience. Wear sturdy shoes or boots. You may want to bring water, lunch or snacks, depending on our involvement it could be a long day. We could dine together after the tour and the optional collecting which takes half an hour at the end of the tour. Email Charles directly if you would like him to send you a .pdf file of a guidebook he wrote years ago on the region and the mine itself ([masked]). Just remember though, free things are usually worth what you pay for them. Good bathroom reading! Sterling Hill New Jersey Zinc Mine 30 Plant Street Ogdensburg, NJ 07439 Tel:[masked]
