GYC New Sailors Night

This is the weekly free adult 'New Sailors Night' event, being held at the Genesee Yacht Club - 10 Marina Drive, Rochester, NY 14612.

Please try to be there promptly at 5:30pm as it gets dark early this time of year so we want to get right out onto the water!

Please remember to drive slow thru Voyager Marina and the GYC parking areas - No Wakes or Dust Trails in the parking lots please!

WE have had a couple complaints in the past, so please be cautious when driving on the stone parking lots and lets keep everyone safe! Thanks !!

Sailors will gather at the clubhouse covered porch that faces the river, where you will each be assigned to your Skipper/Mentors that will take you out on their boats.

We meet starting 5:30pm, and we leave the dock as each boat is filled with New Sailors crew (usually by 6:00pm).

Wear non-marking closed-toe proper footwear (sneakers or deck-shoes are good, flip-flops and high-heels are not!), and dress for cool weather as needed (extra layers are good, especially in the spring when the cool lake water makes the air chilly!).

Remember dress for the water temperature and NOT the land temperature !!!

The Lake is still COLD this time of year so dress appropriately !

Bring your lifejacket and sailing gloves if you have them !

(IF you do not have a lifejacket please make your Skipper/Mentor aware so that they can make sure there are enough for everyone onboard).

Also bring a bottle of water, light snack, etc. if you like. If weather is inclement we'll stay on land - IE we can't sail in T-storms or high winds and waves.

Note : all New Sailors will need to complete the ASA 'Your First Sail' online course (30-45 mins), and bring a print or share screen of their completion certificate to their next sail. The link is here ->

While we try our best to match everyone up to a boat there may be unforeseen times where we have too few boats to accommodate every sailor. Please be patient and we will do our best to make you a priority the following week if we cannot find you a spot that evening.

Remember this is for adult aspiring sailors only, so please come prepared to learn and share your experiences !!

Everyone planning on attending any particular week is required to RSVP thru this Meetup page, failure to do so may leave you stranded on the dock without a boat !!!

All our skippers and mentors are volunteers so please treat them and their boats accordingly !!
