What we're about

This group is for anyone who's interested in sailing but doesn't know where to start... and this is a great place to do it! No prior sailing experience is necessary, but any boating experience is good! We'll be meeting mostly on Thursday nights at the Genesee Yacht Club down in the Rochester river basin, and have several of the GYC Mentoring Skippers ready to take new sailors out for some hands-on experience sailing a variety of boats - and hope that our new sailors will be full of questions and ready to learn about the sport of sailing. This is truly as hands-on as you want it to be - you'll be able to trim the sails, take the helm, and learn about boat-speak, as well as learn boater-safety and some of the rules of the road when out on the water.

Thursday Night 'New Sailors Night' Continues for Summer 2021 !!!

Location visible to members

This is the weekly 'New Sailors Night' event, being held at the Genesee Yacht Club - 10 Marina Drive, Rochester, NY 14612.

Please drive slow thru Voyager Marina - No Wakes or Dust Trails in the parking lots!

Sailors will gather at the clubhouse covered porch that faces the river, where you'll each be assigned to mentoring skippers that will take you out on their boats.

We'll meet starting around 5:30pm, and we leave the dock as each boat is filled with crew (usually by 6:00pm).

Wear non-marking closed-toe proper footwear (sneakers or deck-shoes are good, flip-flops and high-heels are not!), and dress for cool weather as needed (extra layers are good, especially in the spring when the cool lake makes the air chilly!).

Bring your lifejacket and sailing gloves if you have them !

Also bring a bottle of water, light snack, etc. if you like. If weather is inclement we'll stay on land - ie we can't sail in T-storms or high winds.

While we try our best to match everyone up to a boat there may be unforeseen times where we have too few boats to accommodate every sailor. Please be patient and we will do our best to make you a priority the following week if we cannot find you a spot that evening.

Remember this is for aspiring sailors only, so please come prepared to learn and share your experiences !!

All our skippers and staff are volunteers so please treat them and their boats accordingly !!

Thank you !!

Note : all New Sailors will need to complete the ASA 'Your First Sail' online course (30-45 mins), and bring a print of their completion certificate to their next sail. The link is here ->

So go ahead and take the course prior to the event, that way you won't have to rush through it later! :-)
