Announcing a new Meetup for Hiking & Nature Meetup!

What: Breakneck Ridge - Intermediate Hike

When: Sunday, July 25,[masked]:30 AM

Where: (A location has not been chosen yet.)

Contact Tom with any questions about this meetup

Basics:
This an Intermediate hike.
Terrain:Steep scramble, then rolling hills
Elevation Gain: 1200ft up breakneck, possibly more over other hills.
Distance: 5 to 8 miles
Hiking Pace: Moderate pace over all

This is a relatively short hike in distance but the first mile involves a scramble up Breakneck Ridge, gaining more then 1000' in less than a mile. The trail is very steep and rocky, so you must be in good physical shape. Take a look at the photos below to get an idea of what it's like.

The great views up and down the Hudson make it one of the area's best hikes.

Heat Warning: The climb up breakneck is a strenuous scramble and in direct sunlight. This is not a good day to do push yourself on a hike like this.

Hike Route:
Up breakneck ridge, and down the back side. Exact route to-be-determined based on the weather and group composition.

Getting a Spot:
- Since this is at the last minute and only has a couple of spots, please only RSVP if you're sure you can come! Please write in your RSVP if you are driving and from where, or if you are getting a ride.
- Update your RSVP if you can't make it.
- You will see a page of questions after you RSVP. You must answer these questions.

RSVP deadline:
The RSVP deadline is the day before the hike.

Public Transportation Meeting Location & Return Time:
Meet at 8:30 am at the information booth at the center of Grand Central Station. Look for other hikers.

We will take the 8:47am Metro North train from Grand Central to Breakneck Ridge, arriving at 10:06 am. Buy a round trip ticket to Breakneck Ridge. (We will be taking the train back from Cold Spring, but the ticket is the same price.)

There are trains from Cold Spring every hour. We will probably finish the hike in time for the 3pm train, arriving at Grand Central at 4:30pm.

CAR DRIVERS AND RIDERS
People who are coming by car and are willing to give rides, please write in your RSVP from where and when you are leaving. If you'd like a ride, please contact a driver (and bring $5 to chip in for gas and tolls.)

Car drivers should get to this this parking lot (That's[masked], [masked] in case the link doesn't work. Just go to Google maps and enter the coordinates) at 9:45am and shuttle at least one car to the Cold Spring train station.

Meet the group at 10:06 when the train gets there.

Gear:
- Standard day-hiking gear (remember your sunscreen and bug spray)
- 2 liters of water = 2 quarts = half a gallon at minimum. 3 liters minimum is suggested for summer hikes.
- Lunch and Snacks
- Hiking map of the Hudson Highlands park area if you have it
- Poncho or rain gear just in case

A more detailed description of proper day hiking equipment can be found here

All the maps we use are available through the H&N Amazon.com store. The East Hudson trail set covers breakneck ridge.

Weather:
Check the forecast for Cold Spring, New York.

After the Hike:
-Upload your pictures and review the hike!
-Remember to check yourself for ticks. Deer Ticks are barely the size of a newsprint period and often carry Lyme Disease, so check yourself carefully.

See you on the trail!
-Andre
