Theme: Toward an eclectic Stoicism?
Brief description: Stoicism was born near the end of the 4th century BCE. 24 centuries later, some have argued that it needs an update because of the progress we have made in the meantime, in both science and philosophy. But is it possible to organically change a coherent philosophical system? How would we go about it?
As it turns out, Stoicism itself began as an eclectic combination of elements, which Zeno of Citium, its founder, drew from a variety of other philosophies, including Cynicism, Platonism, and the Megarian school. Moreover, Stoicism was always under pressure to adjust in response to criticism from the Skeptics and the Aristotelians.
In this edition of Stoic Camp we’ll explore the varied origins of Stoicism, how it was seen by its contemporaries, and where it might go in the future -- always, of course, with an eye toward the practical implications of our discussions for our life practice.
