Sorry no chips, dip, awesome music or drinks. Just food for your mind. Ever wonder how to stay private, safe, & secure in today's digital age? What is a cryptoparty anyway? A CryptoParty is free, public and fun. People bring their computers, mobile devices, and a willingness to learn! In the time of the event, people will learn and teach how to use basic cryptography tools. Cryptoparties (http://cryptoparty.in) are decentralized global events that are organized to answer questions and instruct people on technology & privacy. Cryptoparties are always free to attend, public, commercially and politically non-aligned and absolutely against sexual harassment and discrimination.
There are no dumb questions, you do not need to know anything about this subject, nor do you even need to bring a computer or phone. However that will help you get the most of it.
This event is always open to everyone and free. We spend hours promoting the event in the community each month not just online. We purposely hand our flyers to anyone & everyone. We also do not ever discriminate. All are welcome regardless of gender/gender non-conformity, age, technical knowledge, race, class, privilege,sexual orientation,etc. Harlem is a diverse beautiful melting pot and we want to represent that.

) A lot of people don't know that back in December of 2013 NYC lauched The Harlem WiFi network ( http://harlemfreewifi.com/ ) rolled out by Sky-Packets ( (http://harlemfreewifi.com/) http://www.sky-packets.com/muni-wifi/ ) it extends 95 city blocks, from 110th to 138th Streets between Frederick Douglass Boulevard and Madison Avenue making it at the time the largest continuous free outdoor public wireless network in the nation. The internet is literally all around us and free in Harlem! Throw in the fact that african americans over index on mobile phone usage (92% of African Americans own a cell phone, and 56% own a smartphone (http://www.pewinternet.org/2014/01/06/african-americans-and-technology-use/)). So what better place to learn about using tech safely.
@geminiimatt has lived in harlem for over a decade and has seen it change for the good & bad. However one thing that has stayed the same is the high level of surveillance & scrutiny faced by residents. Our objective is to liberate the people of Harlem. We have sky watch towers on our streets, we have flood lights in our public housing courtyards, we have remote control surveillance cameras on our corners, automatic license place readers scan the roads, and shot stopper microphones listen from the rooftops. whenever there is a protest, cell phone calls & text are intercepted by stingrays. The inner city is the test bed for these technologies, many of which were designed to fight the war on terror. If this surveillance over reach & over policing isnt confronted in the urban areas of this country who knows where it will grow to next.
