WHAT OUR STUDENTS ARE SAYING

“One of the top three creative writing classes I have ever taken—and the other two were full semesters’ worth. I’d definitely take any creative writing class or workshop by Jay. His class could easily turn into a TED Talk. He engages the entire class and remembers everyone’s name. He’s a great teacher because his delivery is flawless… devil is in the details.” —Rob Luciano

In this class, you will learn:

• how to tap into your creativity, find your voice, and tell a story that captivates people

• how to create a plot using the principles of story structure

• how to use drama, how to use suspense, tension, and conflict to hook your readers

• how to express yourself and your personality in an honest, authentic way that connects with people

No matter what kind of writing you’re doing, the principles of storytelling are universal, and this class will enable you to:

• write a first-person essay for The New York Times' Modern Love column

• write your bio on your company's website

• start a blog and write posts that go viral

• do a TED talk

• tell a story on stage at The Moth that will have the audience on the edge of their seat

• write a novel, short story, memoir, or screenplay

• write a pitch deck for investors that will get your company funded

• have better conversations

• meet and connect with people at a conference or networking event

• tell a story at a cocktail party that will have everyone hanging on your every word

This class is fun and interactive, balancing classroom instruction with fun creativity exercises to help you get unstuck and start writing. Because the principles of storytelling are universal, the class draws on examples not only from the great writers, but also from other genres, including:

• great storytellers like Louis CK, Alfred Hitchcock, and Woody Allen

• great writers like Tina Fey, Nabokov, Hemingway, and Joan Didion

• stories from The Moth and This American Life

• the most captivating and engaging TED talks

• comic essayists like David Sedaris, David Rakoff, Elizabeth Gilbert, and Sloane Crosley
